Status: Salaried Position - Exempt from Overtime.

1.0 FTE – Fiscal Year position

Salary Range: $62,930 to $66.762 DOE

Purpose

Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, the Network Systems Administrator installs, upgrades and supports the Belgrade Public Schools (School District) wide area network (WAN), local area network (LAN), wireless implementation and Internet systems for the district. Lead and assist in network modeling, analysis, design, installation, planning and coordination between district systems and software. Implement network security standards and measures to include network segregation, firewalls, network access and control and Intrusion Detection/Prevention systems. Monitor and maintain network performance.

Essential Job Duties

Maintains specialized and advanced knowledge of networking hardware and software demonstrating advanced knowledge of networking using Cisco or like technologies.

Provide technical assistance and user support to district personnel, administrators and others concerning networks; respond to inquiries and provide detailed and technical information concerning network design, equipment, hardware, software, routing, security, connectivity, configuration, malfunctions, applications, practices, techniques and procedures.

Configures and maintains access points and controllers as required for connection to wireless clients on the School District network.

Manages Cisco or like technology, phone routers, phone server, and the phone VLAN/subnetting network available on the School District LAN that support phone systems.

Analyze network needs and develop, implement and oversee network plans and projects; research, design, coordinate and implement data network upgrades and security solutions; estimate equipment, material, hardware, time and cost requirements for network projects.

Resolve network problems and malfunctions; monitor network equipment, traffic and connections and respond to malfunctions and alarms.

Install, configure and assure smooth and efficient operation of network hardware, cabling, wiring, routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, management systems and other network components, equipment and devices; replace cabling, equipment and devices as needed; research and recommend planning of network management and information security solutions.

Recommend and participate in the development, maintenance and implementation of network standards, policies and procedures.

Ensure that all district servers, VPNs, and applications are properly secured from internal and external threats.

Configure, maintain, and monitor the firewall in accordance with district security policies.

Examine security logs on a routine basis for any anomalies.

Ensure that the findings from security audits are properly implemented.

Perform planned internal and external penetration testing of district applications.

Coordinate with vendors in problem resolution, research, maintenance and testing of security products.

Secondary Duties - Backup to Systems Administrator

Installs, configures, maintains, and monitors Windows Server installations for the School District network.

Installs and maintains applications on school district servers.

Designs, implements, and monitors Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.

Manage Windows Software Update Services (WSUS or equivalent) for patching servers/clients throughout the district.

Deploys and monitors anti-virus solutions for district devices.

Administer, configure, monitor and maintain network system servers and security.

Install, configure and assure smooth and efficient operation of network servers.

Knowledge Skills Abilities

Knowledge of the practices, procedures and techniques involved in the planning, design, installation, modification, configuration, operation, development, maintenance and repair of LAN, WAN and other network systems and related equipment, hardware, software and applications.

Knowledge of principles, methods and procedures of operating computers, networks and peripheral equipment.

Knowledge of network utilities and design and program applications.

Knowledge of networking standards, requirements, layout and infrastructure related to educational organizations.

Knowledge of materials, methods and tools used in the operation, installation and repair of network systems and WAN and LAN usage, implementation and network terminology.

Advanced knowledge of principles, theories and techniques of network design.

Knowledge of applicable types of cabling systems, servers, switches, routers and other related equipment.

Installation, maintenance and repair of computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment. Advanced knowledge of networking management and configuration.

Knowledge of networking concepts and programming.

Knowledge of network security and monitoring.

Knowledge and ability to use On-line help desk support programs.

Knowledge to analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

Ability to perform a variety of specialized duties involved in the planning, design, installation, modification, configuration, operation, development, maintenance and repair of LAN, WAN and other network systems and related equipment, hardware, software and applications.

Ability to analyze network needs and develop, implement and oversee network plans and projects.

Ability to research, design, coordinate and implement data network upgrades and security solutions.

Ability to develop and maintain network documentation such as diagrams, plans and specifications. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Advanced ability to troubleshoot complex network issues

Ability to implement systems to protect data security.

Ability and skill to effectively train users and staff.

Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.

Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.

Successful and substantial experience involving the planning, design, installation, maintenance and repair of network systems and related servers, equipment, hardware and software.

Successful experience managing a multi-protocol network.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in networking within a mid to large organization.

Skill and ability to serve as a team leader.

Necessary special requirements

Montana Driver’s license or the ability to obtain license within three months of hire date.

This position may require working extended hours and on evenings and weekends.
