Position Title: Masonry Apprentice

Pay Range: $22.80-$29.00/Hr

Location: Bozeman, MT

POSITION PURPOSE

A Mason Apprentice must be able to learn from and support the Mason Journeyman with brick, block and/or stone completing custom work on distinctive projects. A Mason Apprentice is required to complete work safely, with quality and within productivity specifications as directed by the foreman or superintendent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares surfaces for laying brick, clock, or stone, which may include proper installation of wall ties, flashing, and papers to job specific standards. (20%)

  • Mixes specified amounts of sand, clay, or mortar powder with water to form refractory mixtures. (20%)

  • Prepares mortar to be spread over brick, block, or stone. (15%)

  • Stocks and maintains a clean workspace for Masons and other crew members. (15%)

  • Erects scaffold to meet safety and job requirements. (10%)

  • Participates in daily huddles and practices safety as a priority on all job sites. (10%)

  • Models The Gallegos Corporation mission and values at all times. (10%)

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS

    The Mason Apprentice will learn to master the following journeyman functions:

  • Measure distance from reference points and mark guidelines to lay out work, using plumb bobs and levels.

  • Shapes brick, block, or stone in preparation for final setting with use of chisels and/or power saws.

  • Spreads mortar along mortar guides to ensure joints of uniform thickness.

  • Spreads mortar over brick, block, or stone and foundation with trowel and sets masonry in place by hand or with aid of a forklift or a crane.

  • Aligns brick, block, or stone with plumbline and finishes joints with pointing trowel.

  • Fasten or fuse brick, or other building materials to structure with wire clamps, anchor holes, torch, or cement.

  • Removes excess mortar with trowels and hand tools, and finish mortar joints with jointing tools, for a sealed, uniform appearance.

  • Construct corner by fastening in plumb position a corner pole or building a corner pyramid of bricks and filling in between the corners using a line from corner to corner guide each course, or layer of brick.

  • Lay and align bricks, blocks, or tiles to build or repair structures or high temperature equipment, such as cupola, kilns, ovens, or furnaces.

    REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-3 years of construction or masonry experience.

    EDUCATION

  • High school degree and/or trade school.

    LANGUAGE ABILITY

  • Must have a working knowledge of the English language to communicate with other crew members.
