The City of Billings City Attorney’s office is seeking an Assistant City Attorney who will perform a variety of professional duties involved in providing a full range of legal services related to municipal government operations including both civil and criminal litigation; will conduct legal research and prepare ordinances, resolutions, memoranda, administrative rules and regulations; and other legal documents; and advise City departments, staff, boards and commissions.
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: provide legal advice and opinions; represent the City and its boards, commissions, and agents in civil and criminal legal proceedings before courts; negotiate, defend, or participate in settlements of legal disputes which may involve significant amounts of City funds; participate in the development, planning, and implementation of policies and procedures for the City Attorney’s Office; participate in the selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating City Attorney’s Office personnel and respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints, and will represent City management on labor issues.
Work Schedule:8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, this is an exempt position and there will be times when you will be required to work additional hours and attend evening meetings.
Salary:$43.37 - $55.36/hour, salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant’s education and experience (this salary range reflects step 1 and 6 of a 7 step pay scale for this position), plus excellent benefits
• A juris doctorate from an accredited law school
• Seven (7) years or more of increasingly responsible professional legal experience in municipal or other government law, or the equivalent
• Membership in good standing in the Montana State Bar Association is required
• License to practice law in state and federal courts is required

• Three (3) writing samples to include one brief, one letter, and one other writing
