Employment Status: Part-Time (.5 - .74)

Hours per Pay Period: 0.65 = 52 hours (Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage DOE: $17.00 - 21.25

The Pharmacy Clerk will perform all aspects of the job under the general direction of the Pharmacy Coordinator, Manager, or Director and under direct supervision by a Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Clerk will primarily work in the outpatient pharmacy greeting customers, answering the telephone, delivering prescriptions to patients and collecting payment. The Pharmacy Clerk will be responsible for over the counter inventory acquisition, receipt, stocking and fronting of displays. The Pharmacy Clerk will be responsible for the overall appearance of the pharmacy area. The Pharmacy Clerk will respond to questions regarding the patient price for prescriptions, terms of payment, and the time for prescription pickup whenever appropriate and consult the pharmacist when necessary. The Pharmacy Clerk will make follow-up phone calls to patients/staff to arrange for prescription pickup/delivery. This position will also perform some record-keeping tasks (e.g. filing).The discharge Pharmacy Clerk will be skilled in the above tasks in addition to the following duties. The discharge Pharmacy Clerk will interact with a variety of individuals outside the pharmacy department. The discharge Pharmacy Clerk will compile prescription insurance information for admissions to the hospital and interact with unit clerks, nurses and physicians in patient care areas to facilitate the filling of discharge prescriptions. The discharge Pharmacy Clerk will communicate closely with the Atrium or Clinic Pharmacy to ensure the prompt filling of prescriptions for discharging patients.

Essential Job Functions

• Greets customers or patients at the pharmacy counter or in patient care areas. Assists with answering the phone and triaging phone questions/requests. Assists with providing price comparisons and helping customers locate over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

• Operates the cash register for patient/employee/volunteer prescription transactions. Cash register transactions can include cash, credit card, insurance card and accounts receivables.

• Delivers and transfers medications to and from the main pharmacy not handled by the pneumatic tube system. Maintains the back-up/emergency delivery system by making runs if the pneumatic tube system is down.

• Places over the counter medication orders to maintain par levels using a telxon unit or the wholesale distributor’s proprietary software. Assists with the receiving, unpacking and inspecting of pharmaceutical shipments. . Inspects all products to ensure against damage and shortages/overages. Stocks pharmaceuticals once shipment has been verified and rotates inventory to maintain current dating.

• Assists with receiving and shipping of mail order pharmacy requests.

• Maintains the cleanliness of the pharmacy area by performing duties such as light cleaning, dusting, etc.

• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.

• Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency safety standards relevant to job performance.

• Rounds to patient care areas several times each day checking patient discharge status.

• Interacts closely with physicians, nurses, case managers, unit clerks and admitting staff to assist in the efficient discharge of hospitalized patients. Ensures that prescriptions are filled prior to discharge to avoid any delays in a patient’s discharge.

• Creatively seeks ways to inform/educate patients, families and employees of the service provided and its benefits. Explains the process and provides assistance to clients as needed.

Education

• High school graduate or equivalent or high school student with excellent reading and math skills
