State of Montana Child Family Specialist Supervisor (22222) in Billings, Montana

This position is responsible for supervising the staff that provides family-centered services within a trauma-informed system to assure safety, permanency, and well-being for children who are at risk of or have been subjected to child maltreatment.

Management Functions

  • Supervises and trains staff that provide family-centered services to assure safety, permanency, and well-being for families and children who are at risk of or have been subjected to child maltreatment.

  • Hires, guides, perform performance appraisals, and disciplines Child Protection Specialist staff.

  • Interprets and clarifies policies, rules, regulations and objectives from a variety of State and Federal laws and regulations related to child maltreatment.

  • Establishes and assigns the workload of employees by reviewing caseload, ensuring equity of caseload, providing guidance in time management, coaching, and organizational skills.

  • May act as regional administrator upon request.

Supervision of Child Protection Specialist staff

  • Provides regularly scheduled clinical consultation on Child Protection Specialist’s cases to assure that safety, permanency and child wellbeing goals are appropriate and in compliance with federal and state laws and that services are being delivered in a manner consistent with family-centered practice.

  • Regularly meets with staff to discuss decisions being made are align with best practices, statute, policy, and agency’s vision, mission, and goals.

  • Provides direct services to clients when staff is not available.

  • Mediates, intervenes, and resolves conflicts between Child Protection Specialists and families or providers.

  • Provides guidance and support to staff in completion of duties to ensure safety of maltreated children, this includes items such as: guiding staff through court procedures, accompanying staff on visits with children and families, and acting in their behalf due to absence.

  • Provides assistance to the Child Protection Specialist when a team method is necessary to achieve positive outcomes for families and children by attending Family-Group Decision-Making meetings, Permanency Team Staffing’s, Multi-Disciplinary Teams, or others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):

Required for the first day of work:

  • Knowledge of child development.

  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations relating to protective services (child safety, permanency, and well-being).

  • Ability to engage children and families to gather sufficient information to make accurate and precise decisions.

  • Ability to identify problems, researching to develop and implement solutions.

  • Knowledge of personnel management and supervision.

  • Ability to communicate information both orally and in writing so others will understand.

  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, even those who do not share the same point of view and may be violent or angry, and maintain them over time.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions, including using spreadsheet, word processing, database, email, internet and other computer programs.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services or psychology, or directly-related degree.

• Four years of child protection work experience or other directly-related work experience working with children and families in difficult and sometimes volatile situations.

• Supervisory work experience and professional certification preferred.

• Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

• Experience working with tribal government entities and/or other organizations of native peoples is highly preferred.



• Knowledge of child maltreatment prevention and treatment and family centered social work practice.

• Knowledge of the methods and procedures for Child Protection Specialists.

• Knowledge of the laws and rules pertaining to child protection services such as child safety, permanency and well-being; Indian Child Welfare Act.
