PURPOSE/DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Job Summary

Staff will report to Clinical Coordinator/ Supervisor of the department.

Clinical Coordinator/ Supervisor will report to the Manager of the department.

Managers will report to the Director of the department.

Directors will report to the VP/Chiefs of the department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Job Functions

Under general supervision, microscopically evaluates cells for cancer and pathologic conditions. Makes independent judgments and decisions for diagnosing results and correlating clinical information with microscopic observations. Acts as a lead for the cytotechnology department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.

•GENERAL

Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

  • Microscopically evaluates all specimen types for pathologic processes, primarily for precancerous and cancerous conditions. Responsible for processing non-gynecologic specimens. Assists physicians with fine needle aspiration biopsies throughout the Billings Clinic at the patient’s location. Advise the physician of the specimen adequacy. (Patient Care – Laboratory – Cytology Specimen Analysis)

  • Enters results of the cytologic examination into the computer system and generates final cytologic report. (Patient Care – Laboratory – Cytology Reports)

  • Prepares slides for processing, accessioning, computer entry, staining and coverslipping. Files and labels slides. (Patient Care – Laboratory – Cytology Slide Prep)

  • Prepares and replenishes laboratory solutions, filters, stains and reagents according to the rotation schedule and performs preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment. (Environment of Care – Equipment & Supplies – Laboratory Supplies)

  • Completes quality control forms, personal statistics and lab statistics on a daily basis according to regulations. (Quality & Regulatory – Quality Control – Laboratory Quality Control)

  • Performs other duties as requested or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

•Lead Duties (Standard Lead Duties)

  • Acts as lead for assigned department. Assists in the management of the day to day operations of department. Responsible for orientation of new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Responsible for maintaining daily staffing in area. Participates in and provides input into interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals and disciplinary procedures. Leads staff meetings. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Day to Day Operations, Lead)

  • Responsible for coordinating regular maintenance activities and supply inventory. Participates in the evaluation of supplies, including quality and costs. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Maintenance Activities)

  • Provides technical expertise and support. Acts as a resource for technical issues. Coordinates with leadership on new technology implementations. (Leadership – Standard Duties – Technical Expertise, Lead)

  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and ongoing regulatory readiness of department and staff. Evaluates and maintains records of quality control procedures. Responsible for policies and procedures designed to meet regulatory standards. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Maintenance Activities)

Education

•Proper cellular fixation and specimen processing

•Regulatory requirements and standards (Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.)

•Biology, histology, anatomy, physiology and detailed knowledge of the practice of cytotechnology

•Professional communication skills, both verbal and written

•Incorporate population specific needs into all aspects of communication and patient care; scope of services provided will encompass age groups ranging from infant through geriatric

•Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbal and written

•Establish and maintain collaborative relationships

•Work effectively in a team environment

•Analyze data and make independent judgments in regard to selection of appropriate procedures, equipment and supplies
