Education Development Specialist (CAH and Ambulatory Focus)



Shift: Varies

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Exempt)

Starting Wage DOE: 31.21 - 36.67

The Education Development Specialist (EDS) influences professional role competence and professional growth of learning in all settings through a systems model. The EDS is responsible for applying in-depth knowledge, competencies, and skills in a variety of clinical settings. Nursing Professional Development (NPD) is a specialized nursing practice that facilitates the professional role development and growth of nurses and other healthcare personnel along the continuum from novice to expert.

In collaboration with leadership, the EDS uses and develops tools, theories, skills, and knowledge of the specialty to assess, plan, research, develop, and evaluate services and continuing education programs that address practice gaps and improves the healthcare practices of learners and advances the practice of the NPD specialty. The EDS has expertise in multiple practice roles including learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion of scientific inquiry, advocate for NPD specialty, and partner for practice transitions. EDS's requires skill, education, and are prepared to design and lead orientation/onboarding of new staff, ongoing competency management, education, professional role development, all while helping to foster a culture that embraces research and evidence-based practice while creating and enhancing collaborative partnerships. The EDS will support the organizational and nursing strategic plan by helping ensure goals and priorities align with patient care, staff needs, and organizational objectives in accordance with age appropriate care criteria for services ranging from infant to geriatric.

• Mentor: Advances the profession by contributing to the professional development of others and supporting life-long learning as individuals develop across practice, professional and

• Facilitates empowered environment that recognizes and responds to staff’s developmental and professional practice issues through mentoring, team building, resource identification

• Leader: Influences the interprofessional practice and learning environments, the NPD specialty, the profession of nursing, and healthcare.

• Champion for scientific inquiry: Promotes Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and Research to generate and disseminate new knowledge and the use of evidence to advance NPD

• Advocate for NPD specialty: Actively supports, promotes, and demonstrates nursing professional development as a nursing practice specialty.

• Partner for practice transitions: Supports the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages.

• Onboarding/orientation: Develops, coordinates, manages, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates clinical onboarding/orientation programs for nursing & other healthcare personnel.

• Competency management: Has expertise in competency management in order to assess, measure, document, and evaluate competence and address deficiencies in staff members’ competence.

• Education: Education Development Specialists use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learning.

• Through the use of the education design process, the EDS is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating educational activities that address gaps in knowledge, skill, and/or practice for identified target audience to achieve specific outcomes.

• Professional Role Development: Education Development Specialists recognize their responsibility for helping learners navigate role transition, role integration, skill acquisition, and succession planning through lifelong learning.

• Collaborative Partnerships: Collaborates with inter-professional teams, leaders, stakeholders, internally and externally to facilitate nursing practice in positive outcomes for customers.

• Inquiry: Promotes and integrates the science of NPD specialty to continuously improve practice. In addition, promotes research, EBP, QI in patient care settings. The EDS may participate in scientific inquiry through conducting, evaluating, encouraging, and/or facilitating inquiry including dissemination of research.

• Learning: Supports the acquisition of knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes upon which to based practice.

• Change: Supports the adaptation of new behaviors and processes in practice.

• Professional role competence and growth: Supports performance that meets defined criteria based on specialty areas, contact, and model of practice.

• The primary outcomes of the EDS practice include learning, change, and professional role competence and growth. The EDS contributes to the provision of optimal care and promotion of health at an individual level.

• Identifies need and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.

Minimum Qualifications


• BSN - Application may be considered if currently enrolled in a BSN program with a defined date of completion within 18 months of application.


• 5 years of RN experience

• Teaching experience preferred
