EKG Technician I
EKG (Billings Clinic Main Campus)
Shift: Day, Evening, Weekends
Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage DOE: $14.18 - $17.01
According to previously defined procedures and upon request of a physician, operates electrocardiographic equipment, holter monitor equipment, and stress testing equipment to record and/or analyze the electrical impulses of the heart, for physician use in the diagnosis of heart disorders. Individual is responsible for setting up, applying and removing cardiac monitor equipment. Responsible for associated clerical and assigned duties. Performs duties under minimal supervision. Is a member of the CPR Team (HOSPITAL ONLY).
Essential Job Functions
• Develops a complete understanding of electrocardiogram (EKG) analysis and maintains a high level of knowledge by utilizing education opportunities.
• Maintains, cleans, troubleshoots and operates EKG carts, various cardiac monitors and stress test equipment to conduct numerous diagnostic tests throughout the facility. Maintains all department equipment and supplies including cleaning, ordering, and stocking.
• Reviews patient chart and history, introduces self, acquires two forms of patient ID, and educates by explaining purpose and procedure of the test to the patient. Assures consent forms are signed and in order.
• Attaches electrodes to the proper predetermined positions according to American Heart Association (AHA). Observes patient privacy/confidentiality at all times.
• Assists providers with various stress testing protocols. In the clinic assists with Tilt Tables and Padnet.
• Operates computer systems, performs clerical duties including data entry, billing, order review/entry, chart review, EKG review, Alerts appropriate staff of critical arrhythmias and abnormalities, billing and charting errors. This list is not all inclusive.
• Responds to all CPR codes; begins or relieves CPR compressions and assists per order of the team captain (HOSPITAL ONLY) Organizes and adjusts work schedule; to preform STAT and now orders, routine orders, new admissions in hospital, walk-ins, outpatient testing, and fluctuations in patient workload. Affiliates and outreach account assistance and other provider's requests.
• Acts as a resource in providing technical support and assistance to affiliates, outreach accounts and providers. Assists in the orientation, skill development and skill competency of other personnel. Participates in the completion of peer performance/competency reviews.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development, meets all mandatory departmental and system requirements.

• Basic knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology, electrocardiogram analysis and medical terminology
• Complete understanding of EKG, Holter and stress testing procedures and methods
• Understands the operational capacity of all related equipment
• Basic data entry, filing and clerical procedures
• SKILLED IN:
• Performing quality tests, detecting and reporting life-threatening arrhythmias/abnormalities
• Recognizing and reporting any abnormalities in EKG rhythms
• Conflict resolution skills, communication skills, both oral and written
• Decipher and understand physician orders and interpretations with complete accuracy, questioning when appropriate
• Effectively detect, analyze, troubleshoot and report abnormal or improper equipment operation
• Effective in time management in the various departments we support
• Act as a resource and provide technical assistance and support to Outreach account personnel and physicians (10% or more)
• Requires the ability to obtain vital signs with patients at rest and while walking on a moving treadmill and all situations, both manually and automatically
• ABILITY TO:
• Incorporate population specific needs into all aspects of communication and patient care, services provided will
• encompass age groups from infants to geriatrics
• Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with team members

• Respond calmly and effectively in emergent or difficult situations
• Requires good physical condition - varying degrees of walking, standing, stooping, and pushing an ECG cart (80+ pounds.) - Majority of ECG’s performed at patient bedside (50% or more) in all patient care areas of hospital and Billings Clinic. Stress tests performed in several different locations. Occasional assistance with patient lifting. Frequent patient transporting
• Hear adequately to perform blood pressure readings
• COMPLEXITY & DIFFICULTY:
• Routinely performs duties in an independent manner
• Work schedule must often be modified to accommodate fluctuations in patient workload or acuity
• Sound technical judgment must be used when test practices must occasionally be altered, according to established guidelines, to obtain desired results
• Must be alert to patient symptoms along with significant EKG changes during and after exercise testing and respond and assist physician with appropriate emergency measures if necessary. Must be alert to patient safety at all times
• Improper lead placement or equipment operation may result in an inaccurate diagnosis
• Failure to maintain positive internal/external relationships could have a negative impact on Billings Clinic
• Improper computer operation could result in the permanent loss of patient test data
• Clerical errors could result in inaccurate patient records or charges which could result in patient complaints or loss of revenue
High school graduate or equivalent
• Six (6) months previous ECG, holter monitor and stress testing experience, preferred
• Must complete the Billings Clinic cardiac arrhythmia course with passing score of 85% or better within the first year of employment (class offerings are available quarterly)
• Healthcare Provider CPR Certification
• Completion of the Certified Cardiac Technician (CCT) exam within three (3) years of employment, preferred
• Courses in mathematics and science, preferred
Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered
