This position determines preparedness and suppression needs, facilitates procurement, formulates and prepares project plans for an 18-person crew. Assists with the formulation of the annual crew budget and maintains a system of accounts to track program expenditures.
Exercises delegated supervisory authority and responsibility, and plans, and directs work to be accomplished by a 18-person, wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire crew. Prepares schedules for work completion and sets work priorities. Develops subordinate performance standards and evaluates performance. Interviews candidates for vacant positions and recommends appointment, promotion or reassignment. Hears and resolves employee complaints, effects minor disciplinary measures and identifies developmental and training needs. Finds innovative and creative ways to improve production, increase the quality of the work directed, or to enhance safe work practices.
Adjusts to large workforce fluctuations due to seasonal variations in work requirements and fire seasons. Assists supervisor to ensure physical fitness, training, experience, and availability requirements are met.
Responds to all risk emergency incidents as assigned, making onsite evaluations of conditions and strategic decisions, and determining appropriate tactical responses.
May be assigned to other fireline supervisory positions for which qualified or other incident command system or prescribed fire positions.
Provides input into home unit fire management budget allocations and priorities.
Develops action items and agency policy recommendations on fire management issues.
Prepares fire prescriptions using fire behavior and smoke dispersal mathematical models.
Serves as technical instructor for national, geographic area, local unit fire suppression, fire management, and all-risk training courses.
A substantial portion of the incumbent's workload occurs in locations vastly removed physically from the home unit. Physical Demands: Duties involve field work requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items. Work Environment: The work is primarily performed outdoors in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, or covered by vegetation. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material.
50% or less - May be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. Work may required travel by light fixed-wing or rotor wing aircraft. Frequent travel will be required during times of peak fire activity.

Wildland Firefighting Experience Requirement: This position requires previous wildland firefighting experience (at least 90 days). Wildland firefighting experience is defined as experience gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, or suppression of wildland fire. Experience may be related to wildfires or fire line experience on a prescribed fire (this does not include experience in the planning stages).
National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Management qualifications and training requirements: Incident Commander, Type 4 (ICT4); AND Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR) or Task Force Leader (TFLD); AND Crew Boss (CRWB). Currency is not required; however, applicants must have held the full qualification(s)/currency at some point in their career. In order to be rated as qualified, we must be able to determine that you meet the definition(s) below; please be sure to include this information in your resume.
For GS-08: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-07 in the Federal service participating in implementing prescribed fire or fire use plans to ensure resource objectives can be met from a fire management standpoint; developing initial attack incident management strategies and tactics to meet the stated resource objectives; analyzing and applying fire management strategies; experience in fire suppression and fire prevention training; - OR - 2 full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education or a master's degree DIRECTLY related to the work of the position; --OR-- an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

This is a LONG-TERM CAREER SEASONAL position (6 to 11 1/2 months). It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 11 1/2 months. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.
This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work.
This position requires you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status.
