Job Information
KLJ Mechanical Piping Designer - DOE in Billings, Montana
Description
As a Mechanical Piping Designer within KLJ's Oil and Gas division, you will play a crucial role in the design and development of piping systems for various oil and gas, carbon capture, and other industrial/facility projects. You will collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that piping designs meet industry standards, client requirements, and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and modeling of detailed piping layouts, drawings, and schematics using CAD software (e.g., CADWorx Plant Professional, Navisworks, or Plant 3D) with minimal oversight. Interpret piping specifications, isometric drawings, and P&IDs to accurately represent piping configurations.
- Develop piping specifications within the software to provide accurate output/syntax of the bill of materials (BOM). Prepare material take-offs, bill of materials (BOM), and procurement documentation.
- Understand and interpret industry codes, standards, and regulations relevant to piping design in the oil and gas sector (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.8, API 570). Support engineers in ensuring that piping designs comply with applicable standards and project specifications.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, civil engineers, and process engineers, to coordinate piping design activities. Assist in communicating design requirements and resolving technical issues effectively.
- Prepare and maintain accurate design documentation, including drawings and specifications.
- Manage project files and documentation according to company standards.
- Take advantage of learning opportunities and training programs provided by the company to enhance your skills and knowledge in piping design, CAD software, and industry best practices. Seek guidance from engineers and mentors to progress in your career as a piping designer.
- Develop detailed piping layouts, including pipe routing, sizing, and specification, considering factors such as fluid properties, pressure, temperature, and material compatibility. Utilize CAD software and other design tools to create accurate 2D and 3D models of piping systems.
- Evaluate and select appropriate materials for piping components based on project requirements, including considerations for corrosion resistance, pressure rating, temperature range, and environmental factors.
- Ensure that piping designs comply with relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations, such as ASME, API, and ANSI. Stay updated on industry best practices and emerging technologies related to piping design in the oil and gas sector.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, structural engineers, process engineers, and procurement specialists, to coordinate piping design activities and resolve technical issues. Communicate effectively with clients and project stakeholders to clarify requirements and address feedback.
- Identify opportunities for design optimization, cost reduction, and efficiency improvement in piping layouts and configurations.
- Participate in design reviews, quality control checks, and risk assessments to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and safety of piping designs. Follow established QA/QC procedures and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including piping drawings, specifications, bill of materials, and technical reports. Maintain accurate records of design changes, project milestones, and correspondence with clients.
- Provide oversight and skills development of Associate Designers within the team.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field
- Proven 3-5 years experience in mechanical piping design for oil and gas projects, preferably within a consulting or engineering firm.
- Proficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD
- CADWorx Plant Professional - Preferred
- CADWorx Equipment modeler - Preferred
- Navisworks - Preferred
- Strong knowledge of piping design principles, materials selection, and industry standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.8 API 570).
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to perform engineering calculations and simulations.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to collaborate across disciplines and interact with clients and stakeholders.
