Job Summary

The hospital Medical Technologist is responsible for performing high complexity clinical laboratory testing in one or more sections of the laboratory with full responsibility for quality control and quality assurance in accordance with CLIA regulatory requirements and standards. Medical Technologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Additional characteristics for the Lead Role: Acts as a lead for an assigned area of department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.

Essential Job Functions

• GENERAL

Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

Collects and prepares test samples according to established procedures and policies. (Patient Care, Lab, Specimen Collection)

Performs waived, moderate and high complexity test specimen analysis according to established policies and procedures. (Patient Care, Lab, Specimen Analysis)

Evaluates, interprets and validates test data prior to reporting. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or immediately notify leadership. Responsible to adhere to and follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever testing systems are not within the laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of performance. Maintains daily operations of the laboratory/department to include, but not limited to calibration and maintenance of equipment; maintains adequate working inventory. Adheres to quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. (Patient Care, Lab, Lab Equipment )

Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality. core

Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Acts as a resource to all levels of staff, responding to questions regarding all aspects department services and assisting with problem resolution. (Leadership, Resource, Department Resource)

Meets annual goals and expectations set by the laboratory leadership team for any one of the following:

Andrology operations

Safety Officer

Laboratory CAP readiness

Facilitate laboratory committee work and participates & reports out on Organizational Committee(s) to laboratory leadership team

Queries/Report Writing

New Technology

Train new employees and medical technology interns

Stem Cell operations

• Lead Duties (Standard Lead Duties)

Acts as lead for assigned department. Assists in the management of the day to day operations of department. Responsible for orientation of new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Responsible for maintaining daily staffing in area. Participates in and provides input into interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals and disciplinary procedures. Leads staff meetings. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Day to Day Operations, Lead)

Responsible for coordinating regular maintenance activities and supply inventory. Participates in the evaluation of supplies, including quality and costs. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Maintenance Activities)

Provides technical expertise and support. Acts as a resource for technical issues. Coordinates with leadership on new technology implementations. (Leadership – Standard Duties – Technical Expertise, Lead)

Responsible for ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and ongoing regulatory readiness of department and staff. Evaluates and maintains records of quality control procedures. Responsible for policies and procedures designed to meet regulatory standards. (Leadership – Standard Lead Duties – Maintenance Activities)

• Minimum Qualifications

Nationally registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Technologist

Current or eligible for Montana State licensure as a Medical Technologist within three months of employment.

Participates in the financial viability of Billings Clinic by ensuring appropriate utilization of supplies and equipment and maximizing the flow of patients.

Quality Control/Assurance – Full responsibility for review of quality control and Levey Jennings, trends shifts. Monitors and documents quality assurance indicators and interprets root cause analysis (RCA) for test variances and controls. Works on process improvements for patient care.

Proficiency Testing – Review proficiency and initiate corrective action as appropriate

Maintenance Log Review – Ensures all equipment maintenance is being documented appropriately. Sign off for equipment calibrations.

Complaint Management – Reviews and troubleshoots problems that may arise and reports information as appropriate to Laboratory Leadership Team

Competency Testing – Completes yearly competency testing on staff and conducts phlebotomy training

Compliance – Reviews and reports compliance issues that may arise.
