The Retention Specialist will work with the Director of the NAAC and Admissions to identify targeted high schools and tribal colleges to deepen ties and better serve Native students, families, and communities. By offering a personalized approach to enrolling Native high school and transfer students, the MSUB NAAC team will guide Native students through their entire college experience from enrollment to graduation. Recruitment efforts will include building relationships with tribal high schools, colleges, and other agencies to provide leadership in recruiting students, as well as assisting in maintaining, strengthening, and developing articulation agreements where appropriate.The NAAC team will collaborate with Admissions and MSUB support services to support Native student recruitment, enrollment, and success. They will maintain regular contact with current Native students, identifying important touchpoints to engage them, optimize educational opportunities, and support their personal development. These touchpoints will include, but are not limited to, new student orientation, early-mid-late semester one-on-one appointments, connections to career development, academic advising, academic support services, library services, health and wellness, recreation, student employment, and student engagement.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:•Guide students through the enrollment process, including submission of applications, transcripts, test scores, financial aid and scholarship forms, payment plans, housing, and transportation.•Collaborate with Financial Aid to help students access and understand scholarships, grants, and other forms of aid.•Provide ongoing support for new and returning Native students, helping them identify personal educational goals, overcome obstacles, and prepare and follow personal success plans.•Develop strategies for student retention and transition.•Conduct periodic workshops on career exploration, stress management, admissions information, goal setting, study skills, communication skills, and test-taking skills.•Coordinate community service opportunities and campus visits to four-year universities for students.•Develop, coordinate, and monitor mentor/mentee relationships for students on an individual basis.•Build and maintain relationships with MSUB staff and faculty.•Maintain documentation on the academic progress of each Native student and track retention milestones.•Provide regular progress and data reports as needed.•Assist with tasks and duties for annual graduation.•Attend Study Nights during mid-term and finals week to offer support to students with assignments.•Perform other duties as assigned.QUALITIES: The Native Student Retention Specialist will join the Native American Achievement Center Team but will maintain close ties to Admissions and other campus support services. The Retention Specialist will develop strategies for student retention and transition, working with faculty and students to ensure attendance and completion of coursework. This individual will play a key role in assisting students daily and will serve as a role model for current and upcoming students, working towards meeting the mission statement and purpose of the College.
