Patient Care Assistant

LAB-PHLEBOTOMY & OTHER (BILLINGS CLINIC HOSPITAL)

Shift: Day

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage DOE: $17.00 - $21.25

This position may be eligible for a $1500 sign-on bonus

On-the-job training provided

Works collaboratively with the health care team including nursing staff and other health care providers to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational and spiritual needs of the patient and family.

Essential Job Functions

• Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, values and philosophy of Billings Clinic. Functions within the core competencies and “Minimum Specifications” set forth by the organization.

• Responds in a timely, pleasant, efficient manner to the needs of the patient, using PSE guidelines. Adheres to confidentiality (HIPPA) and patient right requirements.

• Performs phlebotomy procedures per established laboratory guidelines for collection and processing of specimens.

• Collects laboratory specimens as needed. Performs Point of Care (POC) laboratory testing (glucometer).

• Performs basic patient care, treatments, and documentation by provider order and delegated by RN. These tasks are identified and detailed on the Patient Care Tech Skills Checklist:

• Assists patient’s activities during care, ambulating and turning.

• Gets necessary equipment for treatments by caregivers.

• 1:1 as assigned stocks floor & essential patient needs for par levels.

• Reports changes in patient condition, patient needs, and patient/visitor problems to the Primary Nurse/or Charge Nurse.

• Rest walks may be needed for 2 person transfers.

• Performs EKGs as required and places patients on cardiac monitors.

• Assists Diagnostic Imaging Tech with assisting in transfer of patients to CT or US.

• Assists physician/RN as needed with tasks such as providing supplies and equipment.

• Maintains clean patient environment by assisting in the cleaning and maintenance of the waiting room and patient rooms. • Performs linen changes for occupied beds while maintaining proper patient body alignment and comfort.

• Knowledge and competence in all equipment cleaning

• Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment

• Is versed in aseptic and sterile technique

• Visual acuity’s

• Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve the quality of patient care.

• Takes responsibility for identifying own development needs; meets all system and departmental educational requirements. • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.

• Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization. -Including mandatory education.

• Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

• Basic computer skills needed for documentation, and E-mail communication

• Basic understanding of policies and procedures.

• Able to respond to routine questions and routine problems regarding patient care within the scope of Billings Clinic Patient Care Assistants.

• Analytical skills necessary to understand a variety of basic and/or routine problems.

• Work is performed independently in conjunction with assigned schedules and operating procedures per delegation

• Assists in the follow-up of problem scenarios and helps coordinate with appropriate person.

• Expected to prioritize some aspects of the job

• Interpersonal skills which enable team member to appropriately respond to a variety of patient/family requests and inquiries.

• Interpersonal skills that allow team member to respond to other staff questions and issues.

• Ability to utilize and apply PSE skills

• Demonstrates personal accountability in all facets of role responsibilities

• Anticipates & deals with issues proactively

• Participates in departmental and/or Billings Clinic Meetings

• Active participant in keeping a safe work environment.

• Performing basic phlebotomy procedures to include a variety of draw sites, specimen preparation

• EKGs.

• Understanding and compliance of 1:1 policy

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High school graduate or equivalent

Experience

• Six-(6) months on the job orientation or other health related field performing patient care in a health care facility, preferably an acute care hospital, and/or pre-hospital setting preferred

Certifications and Licenses

• Must successfully pass Billings Clinic phlebotomy training

• Current Montana certification or license applicable to training and/or level

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered
