Job Description:

GAF is searching for a Process Engineer to support the Company’s Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) implementation. The candidate will coordinate company wide efforts to optimize pilot operations through trial planning and execution. The candidate will also participate in design reviews, construction and commissioning efforts for full scale plant efforts. Once operational, the Process Engineer will participate in optimizing the full scale plants.

The successful candidate for this position will be a self-starter who is also capable of working across various levels of the organization in a highly matrix environment. The candidate should also be flexible and adaptable to working within a startup environment while also being open to learning new skills and processes. The Process Engineer will be able to work efficiently in a highly matrixed organization and deliver results with minimum supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as a leader or “scrum master”, GAF’s preferred agile project methodology, for the pilot and full scale plant design, construction, optimization and operational aspects of the Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) process.

  • Lead process optimization efforts in the pilot operations to include:

  • Understand the process mass balance with a focus on documenting equipment setup and operations to optimize grinding and reclamation efficiency.

  • Document cycle times and lead efforts to optimize.

  • Characterize operational parameters affecting the process and identify optimization options through Design of Experiments (DOEs).

  • Document changes to be included and incorporate the changes into the full scaleplant design.

  • Lead efforts to qualify alternate materials and varying levels of recycled content.

  • Participate in the design, construction and commissioning efforts of the full scale plants (varying locations).

  • Ensure pilot plant optimization efforts are incorporated into the full-scale plant designs. This includes equipment considerations, operational settings/philosophy and maintenance practices.

  • Provide assistance with budget development.

  • Develop commissioning plans for full scale plant operations to include product qualifications.

  • Assist with Environmental permitting efforts.

  • Develop Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) process expertise to be considered the subject matter expert.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical)..

  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing projects in a manufacturing process.

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a high volume, continuous process manufacturing operation.

  • Experience in reading and interpreting specifications and drawings.

  • Demonstrated capability to interpret the content and terms of vendor proposals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with full life cycle startup operations from design through commissioning and operations

  • Strong process engineering background preferably in asphalt shingle and/or large scale grinding operations or alternatively in a closely related industry

  • Familiaritywithsensors,instrumentationandcontrolsusedintheprocessindustry

  • Experience with material properties, analytical techniques to measure properties, critical process parameters affecting microstructure and performance

  • Demonstrated experience in process optimization, lean manufacturing and/or in structured problem-solving techniques to include Agile and Scrum methodologies

  • Strong background in statistical methods and control charts

  • Experience with data analysis to include the ability to manipulate data using excel or other software to extract meaningful information from data and to translate technical data into a format to be communicated and used by a broad employee population

  • Strong working knowledge of project management processes and systems

  • Experience in managing outside contractors to safely and efficiently implement projects

  • Autocad experience

  • Proficiency in mechanical, electrical or pneumatic systems

  • Working knowledge of maintenance processes to include predictive maintenance, preventive maintenance, TPM, etc.

  • Experience with process hazard analysis

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to read and concentrate via computer data entry typing and proofreading

  • Required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch

  • Frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing

  • Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of office machinery

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
