The Billings Clinic Cancer Center Medical Oncology Triage Nurse serves as an internal and external customer resource for patients/families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members. To fulfill this position excellently, the candidate must have excellent phone and interviewing skills as well as oncology experience and critical thinking skills.
The primary role of the oncology triage nurse is to assess and prioritize the needs of the caller and provide prompt service to our external and internal customers. The focus will be accurate and appropriate communication to assess symptoms and needs, recommend appropriate level of care, provide education, and problem solve with the caller.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Triages patient/family calls, portal messages and e-mails in a timely fashion
Assess and prioritizes the severity and urgency of patient symptoms and addresses them appropriately to prevent unnecessary emergency department visits, hospitalizations, while at the same time listening and interviewing accurately to assess and meet needs.
Provides clear instruction, education, and communication via telephone. Follows-up with the patient as needed after the phone assessment to enhance continuity of care.
Based on interview assessment and critical knowledge base determines whether the patient needs ER assessment, an office visit or, is able to stay safely at home.
Collaborates and coordinates with team members (providers, schedulers, infusion center, navigators etc.) to enhance communication within all departments.
Able to identify and problem solve patient and family concerns and symptom related problems based on accurate collection of information through excellent listening and interview skills and summarization of the visit that is verified by the caller.
Ability to use computer and possible specific triage programs for consistent documentation of triage calls.
Background and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing education (BSN preferred) with current Montana state licensure.
Current CPR certification.
