What exactly does a radiology nurse do?
Radiology nurses assist in a variety of procedures caring for patients from infancy to late adulthood. Modalities covered by radiology nurses include interventional radiology, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and MRI. Nursing assists physicians in providing moderate sedation for most procedures done in radiology. Common procedures include angiograms with intervention, port placements, mass biopsies, pediatric and adult anesthesia cases, and much more. Patient acuity varies from stable to ICU level of care patients making critical care experience preferred.
What’s the schedule like?
In a typical week a nurse will work 4 10 hour shifts and cover a different modality each day creating a unique variety not easily found in other departments. Taking call is also a part of radiology nursing. A nurse is typically on call once a week, from the end of the shift until the beginning of the next morning, and one weekend every 4-6 weekends (depending on total number of nurses in the department). Nurses also divide up holidays to be on call, typically only 1-2 per year.

Incorporates evidence-based nursing practices consistent with national standards and which support quality outcomes. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the quality of nursing care.
