Reporting to the department chair and supervised by the dean of the college, the Tenure-Track Reading and Writing faculty will also support the mission, purpose, and goals of City College at Montana State University Billings. Responsibilities include teaching up to 30 credits for the academic year of General Education Department specific and department-related coursework. The Reading and Writing faculty will collaborate with peer department instructors to ensure courses and curriculum meet student and industry needs, as well as academic advising of program students, retention, and resource development activities, in addition to delivering courses and teaching.Duties and ResponsibilitiesGeneral•Vigorously upholds a culture of academic integrity.•A commitment to continuous quality improvement.Teaching•Instructional preparation and teaching of assigned courses in curriculum.•Facilitate the learning process that creates a safe non-threatening climate which supports learning across the curriculum.•Participate in assessment of student learning activities to maximize the potential for students to learn what is necessary to meet program outcomes.•Teach up to 30 credits per year online or onsite in classroom and laboratory settings.•Teach courses including RD101: College Reading Strategies and various writing courses, including, but not limited to, WRIT101: College Writing I, WRIT121: Intro to Technical Writing and WRIT122: Intro to Business Writing.•Teach corequisite or “enhanced” courses.•Collaborate with related programs regarding their needs for reading and writing curriculum.•Support student success including office hours and advising.•Improve and refine curriculum and course content to meet the needs of changing student populations.•Assess student learning at the course, program, and institutional level.Service•Engage in student recruitment activities.•University service including participating in committees and activities.•Community service includes participating in community events and volunteer activities.•Serve on committees, task force(s), and special projects contributing to the growth of the Program, City College, and Montana State University Billings.Scholarly Activities•Participate in professional organizations.•Maintain appropriate certifications and licenses.•Maintain proficiency in teaching and specialty expertise.•Maintain expertise in trades education.•Attend selected professional development activities.•Serve on civic engagement projects.•Maintains currency in reading and writing education through the review of relevant journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to include existing and emerging technologies, including underlying educational principles.Education Required:•Master’s Degree in English, Reading or a related field.Experience Required:•Experience teaching at the secondary or post-secondary level.•Experience teaching underprepared/developmental learners.•Demonstrated experience teaching with a Learning Management System (i.e. Desire2Learn, Canvas, etc).•Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment techniques to enhance student success.•Educational background in instructional methodology.•Experience with teaching traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds.Education Preferred:•Master’s degree with 9 graduate credits in English and 9 graduate credits in Reading from a regionally accredited University.Experience Preferred:•Experience teaching at a two-year institution.•Demonstrated service within discipline at a post-secondary institution.QUALITIES:•Demonstrated commitment to supporting under-prepared students.•Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.•Strong organizational skills.•Exceptional attention to detail.•Effective time management skills.•Commitment to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.•Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.•Ability to represent the college and the university as a professional.•Knowledge of university policies and procedures.•A passion for education that supports individual, economic, and social change.•Comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles, and practices of process facilities applied to local industries.•Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of students.•Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.Physical DemandsRequires sufficient mobility to work in a college with hands-on programs and operations, operate office equipment, able to lift, push or pull at least 25 lbs. Additional physical demands may include: stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching overhead and horizontally, repetitive hand movements, sitting for extended periods of time, and 4-6 hours of screen time per day.Applicants will be reviewed and interviewed on an ongoing basis after the screening date.
