Summary

DOWL is looking for motivated and enthusiastic Transportation Interns to assist with various engineering projects across Montana. Learn from experienced professionals who will foster your civil engineering passion and provide personal, one-on-one mentorship to help you gain knowledge and experience with design projects. During the internship, the successful candidate will use various applications and software to analyze, develop, draft, write, and prepare design packages to support Transportation work. Also, opportunities to work with other associated disciplines, such as Water & Environmental Services, Transportation & Structures, and Construction Related Services groups, are likely. Duties may include field work to gather data and analyze site conditions.

Qualifications

To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and ability. Education and Experience

Candidates must have at least one year of college-level course work toward a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. Prior work experience in civil engineering-related fields is desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

You must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, and project design.

  • Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.

  • Calculate construction quantities from plans and specifications to tabulate bid items and estimate construction costs.

  • Perform AutoCAD and or MicroStation drafting support.

  • Prepare and route project-related correspondence and record keeping.

  • Assist with writing and editing construction specifications and technical reports.

  • Complete other engineering-related duties as assigned.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals.

  • Respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or business community members.

  • Effectively present information to clients and co-workers.

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Prioritize special projects and daily workload to complete work promptly and efficiently.

  • Apply mathematical concepts, such as fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Bentley MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge and experience are desirable but not required.

  • Prior work experience in construction, traffic, or other civil engineering-related fields is desirable but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee is required to talk and hear. Employees occasionally must use their hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is generally an office setting with intermittent field work opportunities. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, while noise on construction sites may be high and require hearing protection.

Geographic locations are taken into consideration with respect to compensation.
