Position Details

General Statement

Under minimal direction from the Manager, Custodial Services, the Area Manager, Custodial Services oversees up to 15+ Full Time Employees comprised of Custodian I/II and student custodians. The Area Manager, Custodial Services is directly responsible for providing on-site supervision and coordination of custodial staff (full time and temporary) and equipment; general custodial equipment maintenance: inventory control; training of all new employees; implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures; professional and responsive customer service; and other duties in support of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and direct crew through training, assessing workload demands, organizing resources, and determining priorities, methods, and procedures for staff.

  • Monitor, maintain, and submit payroll records for processing.

  • Provide staff with adequate and safe machinery, equipment, and a safe working environment

  • Work request management

  • Recommend improvements to equipment, products, policies and procedure implementation.

  • Ensuring all departmental policies and procedures are administered fairly and equitably

  • Anticipating and scheduling preventive and predictive maintenance such as floor care, window washing, and equipment maintenance

  • Maintaining Custodial Services department records including personnel records

  • Assist in training and in-service programs to ensure personnel gain and maintain a thorough understanding of applicable standards, safety regulations, and policies.

  • Conduct regular inspections of work to ensure work is performance and completed in a timely, effective, and efficient manner in compliance with applicable standards, specifications, safety regulations, and departmental policies and expectations.

  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for assigned staff.

  • Assist in Preparing and delivering written disciplinary communications when necessary.

  • Review prospective custodial candidates, assist with the interview and reference check process, and make hiring recommendations.

  • Maintain a wide range of powered and non-powered custodial equipment

  • Respond to emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns (from custodial staff and/or building occupants).

  • Ensure custodial staff secure buildings properly as needed.

  • Ensure Safety Data Sheets are available to staff for all products used.

  • Coordinate University-required training for staff and ensure timely completion.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus one (1) year full-time (or part-time equivalent) custodial supervisory experience in a commercial or institutional setting.

  • Experience enforcing building and security policies, regulations, and procedures.

  • Ability to follow and explain instructions, procedures, policies, and regulations, both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated competence organizing and prioritizing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and e-mail software. Microsoft Office Word and Outlook are preferred.

  • One (1) year successful work experience supervising, planning, coordinating, and directing the work activities of five or more employees.

  • Demonstrated competence in inspecting, evaluating, and monitoring employees’ work activities and performance.

  • Experience maintaining and keeping extensive inventories for custodial supplies including but not limited to equipment, paper products, cleaning chemicals, personnel protective equipment, light tubes and bulbs, refuse bins. repair parts, fire extinguishers, and other items.

  • Experience maintaining records including personnel records

  • Represent the department and MSU to others in a professional and courteous manner.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

Physical Demands

  • This position may transport up to 50lbs while ascending/descending stairs: perform overhead work; safely and effectively operate a wide variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles. This position may require you to assist in moving equipment up and down stairs in buildings without functioning elevators.

  • This position requires the ability to: position self to stoop, bend, and crawl: ascend and descend scaffolds, stairs, roofs, and ladders; and traverse long distances. Working conditions include but are not limited to exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather, working in/around fumes. dust, noise, and research-related activities; and working around equipment, machinery, and site conditions typical of a construction environment.
