The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist in the development and maintenance of Asset Management and GIS related systems within the City of Bozeman. Additional responsibilities include database integration and administration to manage stability, performance, and security. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Asset Systems Program Manager, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Manager, Department Heads, other City employees, elected officials, vendors, other government agencies, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-Exempt

Work Week: Typically Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

  • Assists in the evaluation, troubleshooting, and managing of all Asset Management and GIS related systems;

  • Provides support for critical system administration, including stability, performance, and security;

  • Performs required upgrades to maintain software version control;

  • Develops system integrations to ensure interoperability between applications;

  • Performs advanced database administration (SQL);

  • Performs complex system administration for all Asset Management and GIS applications including ArcGIS Enterprise, Work Order Management (Cityworks), Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), Pipe Inspection (Gnet), and related systems;

  • Researches and recommends hardware and software acquisitions;

  • Develops data transformation services using third-party tools (FME);

  • Develops and supports mobile solutions for field data collection and maintenance;

  • Develops and supports online reporting tools and dashboard technologies;

  • Develops quality controls and standard operating procedures;

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems or suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.

  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

  • Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Computer Science or a related field; and

  • At least 2-4 years-experience with GIS-related software, GIS-related database management, GIS-related programming, software and mapping; or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.


  • Thorough knowledge of GIS related computer hardware, software, databases, and related applications including desktop, field, and cloud-based solutions;

  • Thorough knowledge of database design and development, working with relational database systems, and in the creation, integration, and maintenance of the systems;

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Asset Management & GIS systems including Work Order Management applications and support services;

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn ArcGIS Enterprise;

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Microsoft SQL Server;

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Safe Software (FME);

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn operational programs such as AVL & CCTV;

  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn object-oriented programming languages and web technologies;

  • Ability to understand and define user requirements and recommend cost effective systems solutions;

  • Ability to analyze, interpret and develop solutions in a timely manner;

  • Ability to visualize abstract concepts and effectively communicate them to others;

  • Ability to utilize critical thinking and logic in dealing with systems problems;

  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgement and work with minimal supervision;

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, elected officials, vendors, and the general public;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

  • Ability to create queries, expressions, and formulas to write effective technical reports, flowcharts, topological data and other related data;

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

  • Ability to follow proper safety procedures and take proper care of City-owned equipment and tools;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City's Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service, and Teamwork.


  • Valid Montana Class D Driver's License (or equivalent); Must obtain Montana Class D Driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment;
