The Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geographic Planning and Sustainability. We seek an active teacher and researcher in the broad area of planning and sustainability who can contribute to our earth science program in areas of social-environmental systems and who can take advantage of the region’s planning challenges (amenity-driven growth, water resources planning, rural decline, etc.) in their teaching and research. We seek someone who can contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives and to planning-related programs across campus, has demonstrated skills in GIS, in geographical planning with a sustainability focus, and is eager to build a nationally competitive, externally-funded research and teaching program that supports undergraduate/graduate education. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses that may include: Geographical Planning, Land Use Planning, Urban Geography, and upper-division/graduate courses in their specialty area and contribute to doctoral training. Duties and Responsibilities
Teach lower division introductory courses, upper division and graduate courses in areas of planning and sustainability;
Maintain an active research program leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals an other venues;
Advise undergraduate and graduate students;
Participate on department, college, and university committees as appropriate;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Sciences, Planning, or related disciplines by start date.
Demonstrated potential to teach effective lower and upper-level courses related to planning and sustainability.
Demonstrated research experience in planning as evidenced by a record of publication and potential to develop a nationally competitive externally-funded research program.
Demonstrated ability to integrate GIS technologies into planning-related teaching and research.
Demonstrated or potential for excellence in graduate instruction and mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Evidence of research focused both in the western U.S. and internationally.
Evidence of successful collaboration in interdisciplinary terms and participation in a department of diverse scholars.
Evidence of effective teaching of large lower-division classes, including use of new technologies.
Evidence of successful engagement with diverse audiences within and outside the university environment.

Our faculty includes 15 full-time earth scientists, geologists, and geographers and our student body includes about 50 graduate students and over 230 undergraduate majors.
