General Statement

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics ( DAEE ) at Montana State University seeks two individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

These tenure-track positions will be responsible for providing high-quality extension outreach and engagement programming, publishing research on Farm and Ranch Management and Agricultural Markets or related subject areas in respected peer-reviewed journals, and teaching one undergraduate course per year in the DAEE . It is preferred that one position focuses on crop operations, while the other focuses on livestock operations. These are cooperative positions between MSU Extension and the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics. Research is expected to support the extension outreach program and result in publications in refereed journals appropriate for the appointment. Scholarship is expected to result in publications that are impactful and relevant to agricultural producers and firms and for rural economic development in Montana. The successful candidates are expected to be a leader in outreach and engagement activities, including creating and delivering newsletters, lectures, workshops, and other presentations to agricultural producers, farm organizations, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders in Montana. The candidates are expected to collaborate with other faculty members in the College of Agriculture to maximize the educational presence in the state through interdisciplinary research and/or outreach activities. The successful candidates will also teach one class per year in the DAEE and advise undergraduate students. The position is 45% teaching, 45% scholarship, and 10% service. Theses positions will require extensive travel throughout the state of Montana, and occasional trips out of the state.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or Economics or related field prior to the starting date.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in commercial agriculture applicable to farms and ranches in Montana, especially in the areas of production economics, farm/ranch management, agricultural marketing, finance and/or closely related areas.

  • Demonstrated strong commitment to outreach, engagement, and research.

  • Strong potential for effectiveness in extension, teaching, and research.

  • Demonstrated success in extension, outreach, and scholarship.

  • Extension and scholarship interests that contribute to the land grant and extension missions of Montana State University.

  • Ability to interact positively with diverse audiences within the University and with external constituents.

DAEE faculty often obtain extramural grant funding. The department offers undergraduate degrees in agricultural business, economics, and financial engineering, with undergraduate majors numbering about 280, and a rigorous, highly respected master’s degree in applied economics, graduating an average of 6-8 students per year.
