The School of Architecture is part of the College of Arts and Architecture and offers the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design and Master of Architecture degrees with a focus on professional education.

The School of Architecture is looking for faculty members committed to creative pedagogy and a dynamic research agenda in architecture or allied fields. From engaging with current practices to embracing the evolving nature of the discipline, the school seeks candidates who will innovate, challenge, and advance the design professions. We seek deeply engaged and collaborative colleagues possessing the kind of diverse interests capable of shaping future directions of the School while also making a sustained contribution to the quality of its educational and intellectual environment.

We are seeking faculty to provide innovative pedagogical approaches and expertise in one or more of the following areas including computation, digital design, building science and technology, structures, environmental stewardship, professional practice, community design and/or regional design. The work of the faculty member will critically imagine new possibilities for the social, cultural, and ethical roles of architecture in a complex and dynamic world. The position invites creative interpretations on incorporating advanced research, experimental methods, and technical mastery into teaching upper-division and graduate studios that integrate social, environmental, and technical considerations. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to teach lectures and seminars with a focus on their area of expertise and to advocate for the integration of this expertise into the curriculum. They will also have the opportunity to advise graduate students on Master Studio Projects.

Applicants are expected to have identified a research or creative agenda that supports scholarship and informs teaching in a collaborative environment in keeping with Montana State’s teaching-scholarship-service integration model. Faculty are expected to integrate their research, creative work and/or professional practice, and service into their teaching.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop their research or creative agenda, and pursue funding, publications, and dissemination of their work. Faculty are also encouraged to develop interdisciplinary collaborations with faculty across campus or at other universities and institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds to succeed.

  • Teach on-campus in person.

  • Advise, evaluate, and assist students.

  • Innovative curriculum and/or course development.

  • Participate in faculty meetings and service assignments.

  • Meet regularly with, collaborating with, and supporting multi-section teaching and learning objectives.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • A post-professional degree in the applicant’s area of expertise. Post-professional degree requirements may be satisfied by one of the following:

  • Professional degree in architecture (B. Arch or M.Arch first professional), and a post professional degree (Master’s post-professional, Doctor of Design or PhD) in architecture or a related field.

  • PhD in candidate’s area of expertise.

  • In exceptional circumstances, candidates who lack the degree requirements articulated in items “a” and “b” above, but who are outstanding scholars of national or international repute with extraordinary experience and demonstrated potential to carry out responsibilities relevant to the appointment, may be considered

  • Professional Architectural Registration or a Ph.D. Related to the position. Candidates with demonstrated progress towards registration or a Ph.D. will be considered. However, completion of registration or the Ph.D. is required before application for tenure.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Promise of excellence in teaching studio courses, especially at the upper division or graduate level.

  • Promise of excellence in teaching lectures and seminars in one or more areas of expertise.

The Department

As a land-grant institution located in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone ecological system and the Rocky Mountains, the School of Architecture and Montana State University are internationally recognized for research and creative activity drawn from the social, cultural, and environmental conditions of the western landscape.

The School of Architecture offers a four-year pre-professional undergraduate program leading to a one-and-a-half year professional Master of Architecture degree fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board ( NAAB ). The program has approximately 400 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. The College

The College of Arts & Architecture is home to distinctive academic programs within the Schools of Art, Architecture, Music and Film & Photography.
