Brief Position Overview
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and expertise in equine science that encompasses basic and applied aspects of nutrition, reproduction, physiology, health, and behavior. Additionally, the candidate is expected to use both basic and applied experimental approaches to provide Montana’s stakeholders with evidence-based information on equine science and equine management practices. Teaching expectations will include undergraduate and graduate courses in equine science and emerging equine and livestock production challenges. The candidate will actively participate in departmental, university, and industry service activities, and contribute to the growing national recognition of MSU’s Equine Science program. This is a tenure-track position, and the selected candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching and service with the ability to integrate no less than two of the three.

Position Details
General Statement
The Department of Animal & Range Sciences at Montana State University seeks candidates for a tenure track faculty position focused on equine sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized and regionally relevant research program in equine sciences and provide an engaging educational experience in equine sciences to our graduate and undergraduate studentship in contribution to the teaching outputs of the department. Areas of focus may include equine reproduction, nutrition, health, physiology, behavior, grazing management, or related disciplines. The Department of Animal & Range Sciences, and Montana State more broadly, provides a highly collaborative and supportive environment and the candidates tenure aspirations will benefit from opportunities to collaborate with national and international leaders in nutritional and gastrointestinal physiology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, reproduction, and much more. The Department of Animal & Range Sciences maintains a registered Quarter Horse breeding herd, adult equitation horses, cow herds, and ewe flocks that are available for research and teaching, along with a farrier school and riding arena.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Animal and Range Sciences seeks a talented individual who is, passionate about the application of equine science to the benefit of Montana, National, and International producers and the Livestock Industry at large, and about educating animal science students and developing the next generation of faculty, researchers, and leaders by:
Provide instructional leadership and oversight of undergraduate and graduate equine courses;
Advise undergraduate students in our Animal Science program;
Develop an independently focused, but collaborative research/scholarship program that addresses the needs of regional producers and industry stakeholders;
Seek and secure external funding to sustainably support research efforts;
Engage and mentor graduate students in your research/scholarship program;
Engage with and being responsive to producers and industry stakeholders throughout Montana.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Ph.D. in animal science or a closely related field with an emphasis in equine science;
Experience conducting independent research.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Previous research experience in equine science;
Strong history of quality publication(s) in refereed journals relative to academic stage;
Experience in securing extramural funding;
Demonstrated teaching experience.
The Successful Candidate Will
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.

The Department
The Department of Animal & Range Sciences is part of the College of Agriculture at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. The Department of Animal and Range Sciences offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science (options include Science, Equine Science, and Livestock Management and Industry) or Natural Resources and Rangeland Ecology (options include Rangeland Ecology and Management, and Wildlife Ecology and Management) to approximately 400 undergraduate majors. Housed in the Animal Bioscience Building ( ABB ), the Department of Animal & Range Sciences contains state-of-the-art teaching and research resources and oversees 15,000 acres of animal research facilities located as close as 1 mile from the ABB at the Bozeman Agricultural Research and Teaching Farm, and within 40 mins at our Red Bluff Research Ranch, and Ft. Ellis Research Farm facilities.
The College
Montana State University was founded in 1893 as an 1860 Land Grant University and is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment.
