Brief Position Overview
The Museum of the Rockies is seeking a professional, responsible, mature individual to support the daily operations of the museum theater spaces and support the management of the student and volunteer planetarium and auditorium operators.
Under the supervision of the Planetarium Program Manager, the Assistant Theaters Manager will be trained to operate the daily operations of the Taylor Planetarium and Hagar Auditorium. To enable daily operations, this position will train and supervise others with daily showings in the theaters. The primary focus of this job is coordinating, scheduling, and supervising all theater operations. This position requires excellent supervision skills, customer service skills, comfort to learn and work with new technology, attention to detail, and self-motivation. The person in this position will be responsible for communicating and working as a team with fellow managers, student employees and volunteers.

General Statement
Museum of the Rockies ( MOR ) is Montana’s most visited museum. In 2021, MOR broke attendance records with over 226,000 general visitors and thousands of program participants.
The museum is a college-level division of Montana State University, an independent 501©(3) organization, a Smithsonian Affiliate, an accredited AAM museum, and a repository for state and federal fossils. Located on a 22-acre museum site, it includes a 120,000-square-foot-facility, the state-of-the-art Taylor Planetarium, the 220 seat Hager Auditorium, Martin Children’s Discovery Center, and Living History Farm, along with an off-site 553-acre paleontology preserve.
MOR is located in Bozeman, MT, one of the country’s fastest growing and prosperous communities. Nestled into the Rocky Mountains, the community offers bountiful outdoor recreation activities along with a vibrant culture of good food, art, and music.
Duties and Responsibilities
Will train, supervise, and interact with student and volunteer staff assigned to the Taylor Planetarium and Hagar Auditorium.
Requires communicating and working with the multiple departments to ensure that the planetarium and auditorium are covered with theater-trained technical staff for regular shows in those theaters.
Will cover occasional theaters shifts when there is a gap in student or volunteer schedules, duties which include:
Learning the technical aspects of the theaters and how to run shows and events
Provide positive and enthusiastic customer service to all visitors
Monitor guest theater access, always ensuring safety and enforcing risk management protocol while advising guests of rules and procedures.
Support guests in case of an emergency or injury
Backing up the Planetarium Program Manager in trouble-shooting hardware and software problems in the theaters
Using public speaking skills to give occasional live presentations to general and school groups.
Helps visitor flow in the lobby by ensuring theaters shows are announced and start on time. This includes taking tickets and advising visitors on theaters policies.
Meets regularly with the Planetarium Program Manager, Visitor Services Manager, and Volunteer Coordinator to review theaters and staff schedules, and discuss visitor experiences.
Meets regularly with the Planetarium Program Manager, Education Events Coordinator, and Events Manager to review camp, school, and event schedules in the theaters.
Maintains safe theaters by reporting equipment or facility issues to the Planetarium Program Manager and the Director of Exhibits.
Work with the Planetarium Program Manager and Director of Exhibits on research and procurement of auditorium content and upgrades that builds upon current exhibitions.
Assists Planetarium Program Manager in special theaters events, including astronomy events inside and outside of theaters, occasionally on evenings and weekends.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Individuals must be 18 years of age and have High School Diploma (or equivalent)
Experience and passion working with the general public
Demonstrated experience supervising employees or volunteers
Strong communications skills
Experience creating and maintaining work schedules
Experience working with AV equipment
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Have a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent)
Have past museum, education, planetarium, and/or theater experience
Experience with delivering dynamic formal and informal educational programs for a broad audience
Experience/knowledge of Astronomical Sciences
