Position Details

General Statement

Culinary Services (CS), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals for over 12,000 customers a day becoming an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CS proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, 9 retail operations, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery & Salads, and the Farm to Campus Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the management staff, Baker I’s are responsible for:

  • Production of scratch baked goods.

  • Operation of large scale and specialty bakery equipment.

  • General cleaning of bakery equipment.

  • Instruction and oversight of student employees.

Bakers may be asked to focus on certain areas of production: dessert and breakfast production, bread production, bagels and pizza dough, and packaging.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Progressive food service or bakery experience or a combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Experience operating commercial bakery equipment and/or other food service equipment.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Large volume bakery or food service experience.

  • Positively and professionally perform all the functions of the position while providing excellent customer service.

  • Prepare a wide variety of recipes in mass quantity

  • Exhibit interest in the culinary and baking arts and exercise critically good judgment concerning taste, palatability and aesthetics of food quality

  • Exhibit strong communication skills

  • Work well individually or with a team

  • Consistently exercise initiative and good judgment

  • Have excellent attention to detail

  • Prioritize and organize workload in order to complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • Follow health and sanitation guidelines for food preparation and handling

  • Work effectively and efficiently in close cooperation with CS staff in a team-oriented environment

Will be asked to work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and holidays dependent on school and event schedule.

12month position with benefits.

Shift is 8:00am – 4:30pm Tuesday through Friday and 4:00am – 12:30pm on Saturday.

Physical Demands

  • Normal commercial bakery, kitchen, cooler, and freezer environments.

  • Stationary for long periods of time.

  • Move product up and down stairs.

  • Frequently move and lift containers/product weighing up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100lbs.

  • Bend and/or kneel while stocking product.

  • Grip handles on small kitchen utensils and other equipment.

  • Perform repetitive motions related to job duties.

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
