Brief Position Overview

The MSU Office of Sponsored Programs ( OSP ) is looking for an energetic, dedicated professional to administer the university’s software program to ensure efficient software deployment, transition, retention, use of legacy system data, and maintain the integrity of data contained and reported from that system.

The individual in this position will serve as a business application administrator and lead the effort of optimizing use of the data managment system by onboarding and training new users, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring process improvements are implemented quickly and effectively. These tasks will be achieved by building strong working relationships with MSU’s researchers, administrators, OSP IT and MSU central IT team.

Position Details

General Statement

Under general direction of the Associate Vice President for Research Administration, the OSP Business Systems Analyst supports Montana State University’s Office of Sponsored Programs grant administration and business processes including OSP batch reports, OSP data validation reports, MSU web reports, OSP Internal Reports, and grant billing. The OSP Business Systems Analyst provides instruction and guidance to campus researchers, administrators, OSP staff, and University Information Technology ( UIT ) staff, and will be instrumental in the implementation, transition, retention and use of legacy system data. The Business Systems Analyst will also maintain a small research grant administration portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working with IT professionals to ensure enhancement of existing and future software applications for the Office of Sponsored Programs ( OSP ) to meet programmatic and business needs.

  • Contribute to the OSP IT team in the design, development, modification, testing, deployment, and maintenance of new and existing software applications.

  • Optimize operational efficiencies and administrative capabilities for the department.

  • Consult with departmental staff about software system design, enhancement, and maintenance.

  • Work directly with OSP management, fiscal managers, business area experts, and OSP staff to ensure software products fulfill the business requirements for research administration.

  • Recommend revisions to business procedures based on capabilities of the software applications.

  • Maintain a small research grant administration portfolio.

  • Serve as Sub-Award IT Liaison.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, technology, or related field plus progressive experience in information systems management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft vb.net and other desktop productivity tools such as Microsoft Office Products (specifically Teams, Excel, OneDrive, SharePoint, and PowerPoint).

  • Demonstrated experience managing, leading, or playing a key role in the administration of information technology systems, and how data is stored, maintained, and retrieved.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience in research grant administration.

  • Experience with Ellucian Banner Grant Module at a higher education institution.

  • Data administration and/or computer programing experience.

  • Experience writing SQL scripts and reports.

  • Knowledge of grant administration applications and software from both a technical and a business-need perspective.

  • Experience maintaining data integrity.

  • Ability to analyze data and audit reports for accuracy with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the relationships between Banner research accounting, Banner finance, and Banner HR modules.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Banner research accounting tables and complex table relationships.

  • Ability to professionally represent MSU and the Office of Sponsored Programs.
