POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical System Manager of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is accountable for 24/7 operations of the SPD department and has oversight for assuring that sterile processing standards are consistently adhered to in hospital and clinic sites. The clinical system manager of SPD will work in collaboration with the Peri-Operative Services nursing leadership to ensure the flow of instruments and supplies meets the daily needs of surgery to ensure high quality patient care. The clinical system manager of SPD will work in collaboration with leaders across the health system to provide sterile instruments in a timely manner while adhering to high standards. Ensures staff provides high quality infection control and patient-focused services which comply with local, state and federal requirements. The clinical system manager ensures the department focus is on customer satisfaction which includes delivering quality that supports patient care and meets the expectation of physicians and staff in the departments served. The clinical system manager is responsible for the financial operational plan and meeting budget and productivity targets.
The clinical system manager, in conjunction with the SPD supervisor and educator, is responsible for the yearly evaluations and competency verification of all SPD staff members. Quality outcomes is a focus and are tracked through performance improvement measures. Case cart procurement and management of instrument and supply inventories is central to delivering quality product to the surgical services department. The clinical system manager of SPD will work collaboratively with the materials manager in the central supply department in the hospital managing and maintaining inventories for surgical services. The clinical system manager will have broad clinical and operational leadership background in perioperative services.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Required:
- Bachelors Degree
Preferred:
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing
Master's Degree in a Healthcare or Business related field
LICENSURE and CERTIFICATION
Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred:
- Certified Nurse in the Operating Room (CNOR)
EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Three (3) years health care management experience
Three (3) or more years of experience in surgery or sterile processing
One (1) or more years of leadership experience with sterile processing
Preferred:
- Five (5) years of experience in an acute-care sterile processing department preferred
Five (5) years of experience in a hospital based surgical services clinical environment
KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Sterile processing manager must have good interpersonal and communication skills; they should be able to work effectively on their own and in a team setting
Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients
Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures and maintain quality assurance initiatives as required
Monitor and coordinate all activities related to the production and distribution of case carts
Knowledge Skills and Abilities In-depth knowledge of the following standards: AAMI, AORN, FDA, DNV-GL ,OSHA, CDC, APIC.
Knowledge of Word, Excel, Office software and analytical skills. Knowledge and/or experience of instrument tracking systems.

Responsible for planning and management of the decontamination and sterilization process functions across the health system.
Develop performance standards and supervise employees in decontamination, assembly and sterilization of instruments.
Develop policies and procedures in accordance with AAMI, DNV-GL, and OSHA guidelines
Ensure quality performance per conditions of participation for CMS
Support an educational plan and implementation of competencies for sterile processing

Provides effective communication to the department staff and to the health system

10% Time Spent- OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
Coordinate preparation of budgetary recommendations of assigned hospital programs and activities; monitor,verify and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds.
Develop workflow efficiencies to ensure optimization of the department as evidenced by favorable productivity targets
Ensures costs containment to remain competative with the cost of health care
Manages the surgical instrument inventory and supplies supporting departmental activities.
Recommends equipment changes, upgrades and additions to meet manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed.
Collaborating system wide for strategic and operational expansion and development of a centralized sterile processing department.
