Brief Position Overview

The International Tax Compliance Associate provides specialized support to the Lead International Tax Compliance Specialist in the areas of taxation of non-U.S citizen payees and compliance with federal and state regulations, University policy, procedures, and standard payroll practices regarding resident and nonresident aliens. Additionally, the position will provide support in the area of immigration documentation/work authorization. Extensive on-the-job training will be provided. The duties of this position are primarily performed in person, but flexibility may be discussed after the probationary period has been fulfilled.

General Statement

The Office of Human Resources projects pride and enthusiasm in supporting the University’s mission and strategic plan by providing professional and dedicated leadership, guidance, and administration of classification, recruitment, payroll, benefits, and employee/labor relations to the Montana State University Bozeman campus, Agricultural Experiment Stations, and Extension Service.

The International Tax Compliance Associate provides specialized support to the Lead International Tax Compliance Specialist in the areas of taxation of non-U.S citizen payees and compliance with federal and state regulations, University policy, procedures, and standard payroll practices regarding resident and nonresident aliens. The position provides support for fringe benefit taxation. The person filling this position will deliver strong customer support and guidance to non-U.S. citizen employees and student payees at MSU -Bozeman in the areas of federal and state regulations pertaining to taxation of payments, international tax treaties, I-9s, and tax-related documents. Training will be provided.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Administration & Maintenance:

  • Supports the overall administration and maintenance of the international tax compliance program for Montana State University.

  • Maintains databases and records ensuring data is up-to-date and accurate.

Tax Compliance Documentation:

  • Prepares, processes, and submits documentation related to international tax compliance online, by mail, and in person.

Customer Service & Support:

  • Handles customer service requests and guides University Business Services, academic departments, individual employees, and outside agencies.

  • Refers detailed guidance and complex questions to the Lead International Tax Compliance Specialist.

Payroll Support:

  • Provides payroll support related to tax treaty deductions, and other areas related to international tax compliance.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Administrative Experience: Progressively responsible administrative or clerical experience in a service-oriented environment.

  • Software Proficiency: Demonstrated competence in operating personal computers and various software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, email, and internet usage. Microsoft Office software is preferred.

  • Data Management: Ability to gather, organize, and process sensitive and confidential information with high accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Communication and Information Accuracy: Proven ability to effectively interpret and convey complex information, procedures, and directions in written and verbal formats (in-person, telephone, and business correspondence) to diverse audiences positively and professionally.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience in a human resource environment and/or knowledge of human resource procedures, practices, policies, and laws.

  • Experience using Ellucian Banner.
