Position Details

General Statement

In support of the Montana State University mission, the Computer Support Specialist promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of audio and information technology services and resources in the College of Arts and Architecture. This position provides a range of support services within the context of University Information Technology policies and procedures, and coordinates various assignments within each specific school’s programs, such as the management of computer labs and studios in the School of Music, School of Art, School of Film and Photo, and School of Architecture. This position works closely with Students, Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Architecture.

Duties and Responsibilities

Desktop Support

  • Serve as a first point of contact for IT desktop support issues in the College of Arts and Architecture.

  • Track issues within the MSU Ticketing system, using the platform to collaborate with other technicians and customers.

  • Escalate more complex issues within the ticketing system ensuring the customer is informed and receiving excellent service.

  • Provide basic desktop support to Students and direct them towards greater UIT support when necessary

  • Setup new workstations for users and perform regular maintenance of Faculty and Staff devices.

  • Ensure proper security and productivity software is installed on all MSU devices.

Lab and Studio Support (Computer and Audio Support)

  • Support the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of The School of Music Computer Lab, audio studios, DAW and other audio/composition software, digital and analog audio equipment, studio monitor speaker configurations, Dante audio networks, iPads, and other equipment serving the Music Technology Program.

  • Work with students, faculty, and staff to assist in the proper use of spaces and equipment, classrooms, and labs.

  • Install and maintain other computer labs and devices within the College of Arts and Architecture.

Purchasing and Inventory

  • Make IT oriented purchases, relating to equipment in CAA spaces or for Faculty use.

  • Build and maintain a working inventory of IT assets.

  • Inventory management of software and hardware licenses, security codes, registrations, warranty, purchase dates, etc.

IT Community

  • Be a contributing member of the MSU IT Community by participating in the IT Information Exchange meetings and occasionally working on campus wide IT projects.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Two years of relevant post-secondary education or two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) directly relevant progressive experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Experience working with macOS and Windows supporting common desktop software was well as Apple management experience including installing, configuring, ensuring security, upgrading, and troubleshooting hardware and software systems and their attached peripherals including networked printers, scanners, projectors, etc.

  • Experience supporting audio and music software, hardware, and various related equipment.

  • Knowledge of industry standard help desk processes and procedures.

  • Knowledge of security-related policies and guidelines.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Music Technology or a related field and equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Knowledge of basic networking principles and troubleshooting procedures; and knowledge of TCP /IP/ DNS / DHCP , Ethernet and other networking technologies.

  • Skilled at project management tools and techniques.

  • Knowledge of Apple Mobile Device Management.

  • Knowledge of and experience using scripting and programming languages.

  • Skilled at independent research and application of emerging technologies and innovations.

This position may work variable/flex hours, depending on college need to included evenings and weekends.
