Job Summary:
The position will lead discovery & problem-solving and research & development, related to high temperature single-crystal materials made for commercial laser, scintillation, and quantum information science applications. We value a hands on Engineer who is a team player that brings broad technical and administrative experience in material science and manufacturing. The operation utilizes complex, high-tech systems in a low volume/high mix production environment.
Job Duties:
Develop improvements to existing crystal growth processes for improved material performance, increased production yields and reduced cost structures.
Lead the research & development of next generation large bulk single crystal materials for laser, scintillation, and quantum information science applications.
Plan, design, and carry out experiments, as well as direct activity of engineers and technicians carrying out experiments. Analyze data and report results to managers and team for 2 or more projects on a weekly basis. Must be able to plan experiments from conception to completion.
Support the production team in improving and troubleshooting existing product lines.
Compile reports and participate in customer reviews in Bozeman and in the field. Be able to articulate to customers report findings and associated data.
Maintain essential inventory and ensure common areas of the lab are well kept and orderly.
Participate in advanced training programs to increase product and technology knowledge with ability to share learnings with team and more junior staff.
May have additional support activities including compiling reports and assumption of indirect activities (safety, IT, IP, etc.).
Job Requirements:
PhD degree in Physics, Solid-State Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science or Master’s degree with experience in bulk oxide crystal growth strongly preferred; or Bachelor’s degree with relevant work experience required.
2+ years of specific experience in high-temperature oxide crystal growth (Czochralski growth experience strongly preferred).
Rare-earth spectroscopy & mass spectrometry experience highly desired.
Experience using laboratory equipment such as furnaces, ovens, programmable controllers, materials characterization equipment, etc.
Experience with solid-state synthesis and wet chemistry desirable.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
High energy, proactive orientation, self-motivated.
Strong team player and effectively communicate with customers.
Act independently to drive experimentation & testing.
Write clear, concise and understandable technical proposals and / or project reports.
Drive toward solutions to project goals.
Compile data in a way it can be shared across the organization.
Able to troubleshoot and resolve science and project issues.
Lead teams to ensure project goals and timelines are met.
Conduct testing on laboratory analysis equipment.
Travel (both domestic and international) expectation is 10%.
