Position Details

General Statement

Campus Recreation is responsible for the management and programming of all recreational facilities at Montana State University including the North Dome, Outdoor Recreation Building, and the Lambert Field Complex. Coming soon the department will add the brand new 185,000 square foot Student Wellness Center. All of these facilities are multi-purpose and meet the varied needs of the campus and the community. The department provides additional services for all Wellness Partners, Health and Human Development, as well as hosting many other events in the new SWC .

Custodians provide cleaning and maintenance services for the MSU Student Wellness Center. The emphasis is on cleaning public areas which include restrooms, carpeted and hard-surfaced floor care, trash removal, room set-ups and other related duties. Custodians may work individually or on a team. The position is asked to interact with students and guests in a positive manner to accomplish the department mission and aid in retention.

Duties and Responsibilities

Year-round duties performed daily and weekly:

  • Clean and sanitize all public areas in Student Wellness Center and other associated areas. This includes but is no limited to: bathrooms, lobbies, elevators, hallways, stairways, gymnasiums and entrance areas. (i.e. Any area that the public utilizes).

  • Trash removal.

  • Clean offices and break rooms.

  • Sweep and mop hallways.

  • Scrub pool deck.

  • Dust mop gym and running track.

  • Clean fitness areas and mats.

  • Sanitation of all public restrooms on a daily basis.

  • Clean and sanitize areas of bodily fluids, chemical spills, and hazardous waste.

  • Stock bathroom areas with associated products.

  • Carry building keys and monitor Student Wellness Center doors as needed.

Light maintenance duties:

  • Replace light bulbs as needed.

  • Put fitness equipment back in place.

  • Set rooms and other facility areas

Occasional duties performed periodically throughout the year:

  • Strip and refinish floors.

  • Clean/Extract carpets and furniture.

  • Wash walls and windows.

  • Pressure wash bleachers and permanent seating areas.

On call emergency cleanup of Outdoor Rec and Lambert Turf Building.

And actively contributes to the success of the department by performing other duties as needed in support of the department’s mission

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • High school graduation or G.E.D. plus cleaning experience (i.e. custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, etc).

  • Experience providing professional and positive customer service while actively engaging in duties.

  • May work with minimal supervision.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with special event preparation and/or cleanup.

  • Graveyard or nighttime shift experience.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • This position will primarily work Sun- Thurs: 3 pm – 12 am (Sun could be something more flexible)

  • Must be able to substitute for other graveyard/nighttime shifts as the department event schedule changes

  • Will work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands

  • Will occasionally work outside and in inclement weather. Occasionally might shovel snow in and around entry areas or at one of the outside facilities.

  • Moving up and down stairs.

  • Moving up and down ladders.

  • Stationary or moving about for extended periods of time.

  • Gripping handles on cleaning equipment.

  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.
