General Statement

Founded in 1893 as Montana’s land-grant institution, Montana State University has established a national and international reputation for excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and sciences, agriculture, architecture, education, engineering, health and human development, and nursing. Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean is the senior academic and administrative officer of the College of Business and, as such, is responsible for working with senior administration, college faculty and staff in setting strategic, operational, and financial directions.

Consequently, the Montana State University College of Business seeks a creative, energetic, transparent, and respected leader to build on the considerable strengths and opportunities of the college.

Strategic Leadership Priorities

  • Inspire a collective vision and plan for the college

  • Provide effective management, administration, and leadership for the college

  • Advocate for interdisciplinary collaborations

  • Maintain and enhance accreditation outcomes

  • Increase enrollment growth with an emphasis on student success

  • Be an articulate spokesperson for the College of Business

  • Raise funds in support of MSU’s capital campaign

  • Nurture, celebrate, and support the primary responsibilities of faculty in teaching, scholarship and creative activities, and engagement of faculty and the integration of these activities.

  • Model a commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence

  • Contribute to the University’s mission

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Earned terminal degree

  • A record of accomplishment suitable for tenure as a full professor in a discipline appropriate to the College of Business

  • A record of progressively responsible administrative experience at a university that includes a similar degree of complexity

  • Academic administrative experience that includes budgeting as well as oversight for program development, recruitment and personnel evaluation and management

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and access

In its next Dean, Jake Jabs College of Business will give preference to candidates who demonstrate:

  • Management skills that include a clear ability to develop positive relationships with multiple constituencies within and outside of the college

  • Effective leadership of an academic unit under a shared governance model

  • Experience in effective strategic planning and assessment

  • Demonstrated advocacy for an academic unit both on and off campus

  • An understanding of the emerging opportunities for externally funded research and scholarship

  • Evidence of commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education

  • Experience with student retention planning and implementation strategies

  • A creative and approachable manner that kindles the innovative spirit of others

  • Ability to foster teaching, scholarship, service, and professional development of faculty in a student-centered environment

  • Evidence of leading transformational change within business-related disciplines and new interdisciplinary areas

  • Demonstrated accomplishments in innovative partnerships

  • Evidence of strong communication skills and a commitment to maintaining a culture of openness, transparency, shared governance and inclusive excellence

  • Problem solving skills which support and encourage open dialog and engagement of all concerned parties.

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Show evidence of accomplishments requisite for a senior faculty appointment in the college; proven record of leadership as a faculty member, scholar, creative artist/designer, and administrator

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Working with a host of dedicated and accomplished faculty, they will be someone who can lead and support the faculty and students in nationally-accredited programs to capitalize on the rich array of academic experiences, research opportunities, and creative activities unique to the expertise and accomplishments of the faculty

  • Experience fostering academic student success and implementing retention practices

  • Maximize the opportunities present in a university with dynamic science and technology activities
