Brief Position Overview

The main emphases of the Roosevelt County Extension Agent position will be in the areas of Agriculture and 4-H. The agent also has secondary responsibilities in the area of community development. The office also has a full time Family and Consumer Science and 4-H Agent and full time Administrative Assistant. The Fort Peck Indian Reservation is also served by an Extension Agent for the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program and an Extension Agent for the Fort Peck Community College.

General Statement

COUNTY PROFILE : Roosevelt County is located in northeast Montana. The county borders North Dakota to the East and the Missouri River to the South. The Extension Office is located in Culbertson (population 690) in the eastern part of the county. Wolf Point, the county seat is on the west end of the county. The county has a population of approximately 11,175 with the largest town being Wolf Point (population 2774). The other three incorporated towns include Poplar (Pop 852); Froid (Pop 235); and Bainville (Pop 215); along with the unincorporated communities of Brockton and Ft. Kipp. The approximate land area of the county is 1,508,000 acres of which 1,271,000 are in farmland. The average farm size is approximately 2,700 acres. The Fort Peck Indian Reservation occupies all but the eastern portion of the county. The county is a prominent agricultural area in the state and ranks in the top five in the state for durum and spring wheat production. Other important crops include peas, lentils, alfalfa, and oilseeds such as canola and safflower. Beef cattle production is also an important part of the county’s economy. The cropland is largely non-irrigated with some irrigation along the Missouri River. The Roosevelt County 4-H program has over 100 youth and adult members, and four 4-H Clubs. The county has a variety of recreational activities, including sporting activities, hunting, and fishing. Fort Peck Lake is accessible for a pleasurable day of boating, picnicking, camping, or touring. The town of Culbertson is home to a K-12 school, a fully staffed hospital and is within an hour of larger hospitals in Sidney and Williston, North Dakota. Also available to Culbertson residents are an outdoor sports complex, library, senior center, swimming pool, and a newly developed fishing pond and walking trail.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, foster and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate educational programs in agriculture, including dryland and irrigated crop production, livestock production, farm and ranch financial management, noxious weed management, range management, pest management, and pesticide training.

  • In cooperation with the other agent, provide support, including leadership, planning and innovation to the 4-H youth development program. Coordinate the planning and delivery of leader education programs at the county and in cooperation with neighboring agents at the regional level.

  • Plan implement and evaluate educational programs in horticulture and home pest management.

  • Network closely with policy makers, producer groups, government agencies and others in order to assess needs and guide local program priorities.

  • Serve as an ex-officio member of various agency and community committees relating to agriculture, youth development, and community development.

  • Cooperate with other Extension staff, government agencies, tribal groups, and civic groups in implementing, maintaining, and evaluating a balanced interdisciplinary Extension program.

    *Involve local officials and community citizens in determining needs, identifying major issues, and assisting in presenting/facilitating programs in various communities in Roosevelt County.

  • Utilize all available media sources, including electronic mail, the Internet, and other advancing technology, to communicate with MSU Extension staff and others, and to disseminate information to county clientele.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Government Pesticide Applicator’s License and a Montana Driver’s License.

  • Comply with all Extension federal, state, university, and county reporting requirements.

  • Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.

  • Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with the Roosevelt County Commissioners.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • At least one degree or significant relevant work experience in agronomy, which may include irrigated and dryland crop production, forage crop production, animal science, range management, farm/ranch management, horticulture, or other closely related fields.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead groups; assess community needs; and develop, organize, plan, teach, and evaluate effective Extension programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities.

  • Computer literacy as demonstrated by evidence of computer use in program development, delivery and/or management.

  • Experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals, groups, and community organizations.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s Degree.

  • Knowledge or experience in irrigated and dryland crops production, livestock production, farm management, weed and pest management, and horticulture.

  • Knowledge or experience in 4-H or other youth related programs

  • Facilitation and mediation experience or training.

  • Training and/or experience in budget development and management.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

This position, if filled at the Master’s degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master’s degree will be required to complete their Master’s degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

Physical Demands
