General Statement

This position is located in Hardin

County Profile: Big Horn County is located in southcentral Montana and borders Wyoming to the south. The Big Horn County Extension Office is located in Hardin which is also the county seat. The county has a population of 12,865, with 3,505 living in the county seat of Hardin. The county is comprised of 3.2 million acres of which 2.2 million acres are located on the Crow Indian Reservation. The landscapes of Big Horn County are diverse, featuring the Big Horn and Pryor Mountains as well as semi-arid plains and irrigated river valleys. A small portion of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation is located in the eastern portion of the county. Wheat and beef cattle account for a large portion of the Ag Receipts in the county. There are also significant acreages of irrigated farmland that features a variety of crops including sugar beets, alfalfa, malting barley, and corn. Major industries of the county are agriculture and coal mining. Two attractions in the county are the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Custer National Cemetery and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Recreational opportunities include world class hunting and fishing and water sports. Crow Agency is the home of Little Big Horn College. Diversity of population and geography are keys to Big Horn County’s uniqueness. Hardin is home to a modern hospital and is only 45 miles away from a major medical community in Billings. The Big Horn County 4-H program consists of approximately 120 youth members and fifty adult leaders in five organized clubs.

GENERAL INFORMATION : The main emphases of the Big Horn Extension Agent position will be in the areas of Agriculture and 4-H/Youth Development. Secondary emphasis will be in community/economic development. The office is also staffed with one other fulltime Extension agent whose primary job emphases are Family and Consumer Science and 4-H/youth development, and one full-time and one .75 FTE administrative assistant who are supervised by both agents. A full-time SNAP -Ed assistant is also housed in the Big Horn County Extension Office.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, foster and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate educational programs in agriculture, including dryland and irrigated crop production, livestock production, farm and ranch financial management, noxious weed management, range management, pest management, and pesticide training.

  • In cooperation with the other agent, provide support, including leadership, planning and innovation to the 4-H youth development program. Coordinate the planning and delivery of leader education programs at the county and in cooperation with neighboring agents at the regional level.

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in horticulture and home pest management.

  • Collaborate with other Big Horn County Extension staff members to provide appropriate education and service in areas of importance to the local community.

  • Network closely with policy makers, producer groups, government agencies and others in order to assess needs and guide local program priorities.

  • Cooperate with other Extension staff, government agencies, and civic groups in implementing, maintaining, and evaluating a balanced interdisciplinary Extension program.

  • Involve local citizens and community organizations in identifying needs and priorities, targeting new audiences, and developing and implementing appropriate and responsive educational programming.

  • Serve as ex-officio member of various agency and community committees and boards relating to agriculture and youth development.

  • Cooperate with other Extension staff, government agencies, and civic groups implementing, maintaining, and evaluating a balanced interdisciplinary Extension program.

  • Utilize all available media sources, including electronic mail, the internet, and other advancing technology, to communicate with MSU Extension staff and others, and to disseminate information to county clientele.

  • Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.

  • Comply with all Extension, federal, state, university and county reporting requirements.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • At least one degree or significant relevant work experience in agronomy, which may include irrigated and dryland crop production, forage crop production, animal science, range management, farm/ranch management, horticulture, or other closely related fields.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach, and evaluate educational programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities.

  • Computer literacy as demonstrated by evidence of computer use in program development, delivery and/or management.

  • Experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals, groups, and community organizations.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Masters Degree.

  • Knowledge or experience in irrigated and dryland crops production, livestock production, farm management, weed and pest management, and horticulture.

  • Knowledge or experience in 4-H or other youth related programs.

  • Facilitation and mediation experience or training.

  • Training and/or experience in budget development and management.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

This position, if filled at the Master’s degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master’s degree will be required to complete their Master’s degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

Physical Demands
