Brief Position Overview

The University Business Services Accounting Office provides accounting and business services for all components of the University. This position will perform advanced accounting functions in the central accounting office of the University; coordinate and direct the University’s Unrelated Business Income tax reporting and other central accounting and financial reporting functions. This position is also responsible for reconciling general ledger accounts to various sub-systems (SABHRS, depository and outside bank accounts, fixed assets, student account reports, etc.) and investigating and resolving differences. Preparation and review financial statement schedules, general ledger journal entries, and other reporting subject to audit and/or submission to third parties is also required as assigned. This position will be cross trained with other duties within the University Business Services office.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare, summarize, and analyze financial information on an ad-hoc basis.
Create general ledger journal entries and financial schedules subject to audit and/or submission to third parties.
Assist other staff in the accounting office which may include initiating and completing inter-unit journals with other State agencies; administering the purchasing card program; monitoring transactions made on MSU’s four campuses; accounts receivable billing functions to outside vendors and responding to questions from other UBS work units.
Assist in the implementation of GASB standards.
Coordinate and direct the University’s Unrelated Business Income Tax Reporting.
Manage and/or monitor various university programs and projects in accordance with internal controls, university policies and various regulations on a state, local and federal level.
Prepares reports and documentation to respond to auditors or other third parties UBS is accountable to. Secondary Duties:
Reconcile accounts and/or prepare specific journal entries, including year-end journal entries.
Assist, train and guide other MSU campuses and departments with reconciliation issues or questions. Assist in ensuring University–wide compliance with University, State, IRS and other policies and guidelines. Assist in creating year-end financial schedules.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accounting practices and financial reporting.
Successful experience gathering, analyzing and reconciling substantial amounts of financial data with a high degree of detail and accuracy.
Successful experience using analytical or interpretive processes and use of independent decision making to solve problems and resolve account differences.
Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Excel to sort, analyze, format and summarize financial information.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrated experience with a complex accounting system.
Experience developing new processes and/or procedures for continuing compliance with changing regulations and to prevent errors or strengthen internal controls.
Demonstrated experience with fund accounting.
