Position Summary

The City of Bozeman Swim Department is now accepting applications for full-time and part-part time year-round Lifeguard & Swim Instructors who will perform critical lifeguarding duties, provide direction to the Lifeguard Instructor I and II’s, ensure patron safety at the indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities, provide important aquatics program instruction, and assist in the maintenance, upkeep, and custodial duties of the pool facilities, test chemicals and respond to protocol to help maintain water balance, and manages the facilities in the absence of upper management.

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week - Monday - Friday from 12:30pm - 9:30pm.

Current operations are Monday - Friday with plans to expand to weekends which may include Saturday and/or Sunday shifts of 7:30am - 4:30pm.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Supervises aquatics programs;

  • Supervises and performs maintenance, repair and custodial services;

  • Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities, providing active accident prevention, monitoring patrons in the water, and completing rescue accident and incident reports;

  • Provides aquatics programs instruction to patrons, including composing lesson plans, demonstrating proper stroke techniques and awareness, ensuring safety of children and adults by watching for potential hazards and dangerous situations, and teaching water safety and pool rules;

  • Serves as member of management and as on-call management;

  • Manages assigned Lifeguard/Instructors, including supervising daily cleaning and guarding duties and evaluating work performance;

  • Documents records of own activities;

  • Tests and monitors chemical balance in water and changes to water chemistry as directed;

  • Provides customer service, including answering questions, referring customers to other agencies or organizations when necessary, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs, answering phones and directing calls, and registering patrons for programs;

  • Assists in leading in-service trainings;

  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;

  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; and

  • Some (1-3 years) experience in supervision, pool chemistry, teaching aquatics programs lessons, and lifeguarding;

  • OR Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of basic First-Aid, CPR, and lifeguarding techniques;

  • Thorough knowledge of proper aquatic teaching techniques in all ages and levels of ability;

  • Thorough knowledge of pool water chemistry and of water quality regulations, policies and standards;

  • Thorough knowledge of community and recreation programs;

  • Some knowledge of related facilities maintenance;

  • Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life threatening injuries;

  • Ability to swim at an American Red Cross Level Four;

  • Ability to instruct individuals on water safety;

  • Ability to properly perform rescues;

  • Ability to maintain current certifications;

  • Ability to use power and hand tools for cement work, painting, woodworking, plumbing, tiling, and other repairs;

  • Ability to accurately operate a point-of-sale and pass registration computer program;

  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public;

  • Ability to assess the capabilities of employees and delegate and direct the work of others;

  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City's Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License and must obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment;

  • Must possess the following certifications (current or have qualifications to challenge the course such as an expired card).

  • Lifeguarding/First Aid certification;

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Rescuer certification;

  • Swim Lesson Instructor certification such as Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, Starfish Swimming Instructor Certification, International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP) certification, Certified Fundamental Swim Instructor (CFSI) certification, or Adult Learn-to-Swim Instructor (USMS ALTS) certification

  • As a condition of continued employment:

  • Must obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) License within one (1) year of employment;

  • Offers for employment are conditional upon the following:

  • Must obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) License within one (1) year of employment;

  • Satisfactory completion of a Swim Test; and

  • Satisfactory responses to the appropriate post conditional offer process.
