Position Details

General Statement

This position is part of the Collection Access and Technical Services ( CATS ) department, Interlibrary Loan ( ILL ) unit. We are looking for someone who can problem solve creatively to provide seamless services, and work collaboratively in a team spirited environment with other colleagues and student employees. This position provides support to MSU patrons requesting materials by processing, ordering, and delivering articles and loans from other libraries as well as processing and electronically delivering articles and materials owned by the MSU Library to other libraries.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Largely responsible for the processing of lending requests for materials owned by the MSU Library that have been requested by other libraries. This is completed through a multi-step process in coordination with the ILL team. This process includes verifying the availability of requested material; location and retrieval of the material; accepting or rejecting the request within the appropriate software/system, scanning of material (when necessary) with appropriate hardware and software; delivery of material either electronically or physically shipping.

  • Physically process loaned items upon return from requested library or MSU’s distance patrons; check condition of material, ensure items are checked in properly, and transfer to appropriate location for shelving.

  • Provide backup processing of borrowing requests.

  • Provide excellent customer service demonstrating the Library’s values to all patrons.

  • Knowledge of, or ability to be trained in, proper processing of postal items both domestic and foreign.

  • May be required to work a portion of some workdays at the off-campus Library Annex to retrieve and scan materials to be delivered electronically. The Annex is an off-campus, closed stacks, storage facility located approximately one mile from the Library.

Work on cross-departmental, MSU Library efforts to ensure we are providing materials to our patrons and other libraries as accurately, efficiently, and equitably as possible.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Two years post-secondary education and/or an equivalent amount of experience.

  • Ability to follow established procedures and perform work requiring attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and procedures.

  • Demonstrated competence using personal computers and various software such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, email, internet, and relational databases (Microsoft Office 365 suite preferred).

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience working in an academic library.

  • Relevant knowledge of library systems such as electronic databases, online catalogs, and discovery services.

  • Demonstrated experience working with Ex Libris’ Alma system, ILLiad, or other ILL software.

  • Basic knowledge of bibliographic records.

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Be very detail-oriented, able to prioritize deadlines, and possess strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Possess ability to work both collaboratively as well as independently with great problem-solving skills.

  • Must communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Able to provide excellent service.

  • Ability to suitably adapt to changing workflows with little notice.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to retrieve materials by using step stools and ladders (up to 11 feet tall).

  • Be able to push fully loaded book carts.
