General Statement

Looking for a full-time, customer-service focused position at Montana State University complete with all standard benefits including tuition waiver for up to six credits per semester? Seeking an alternate work schedule outside the typical Mon-Fri 8-5 routine? Consider joining the Access, Information, and User Services ( AIUS ) department at the MSU Library. The AIUS department is the vibrant user-centered public face of the MSU Library and we’re seeking an energetic, friendly, and tech confident individual to become the newest member of our team as our Library Closer.

Never worked in a library before? Not a problem! We can train you in all the library specific knowledge needed to be successful in this position. The AIUS Staff Supervisor is an entry level classified staff position intended to introduce the individual to all aspects of public service work in the library including work focused on circulation, building management, and student employee supervision. In the beginning you will learn all aspects of general library public service operations. Then, over time, you will take on unique functional specialties within the department as needed and depending on your fit, skills, abilities, and interests.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Close the library five nights a week, Sunday – Thursday, during regular semesters. The person in this role is the only staff member of the library present during the evening hours of operation, working with one student employee during this time.

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate AIUS student employees and participate in their personal growth and development, including contributing to their semesterly performance reviews.

  • Work at the Service Desk interacting with people in-person and on the phone to answer their questions, solve problems, explain policies, help them find information, check library materials in and out, and perform financial transactions.

  • Help the Service Desk team to maintain building operations, including classroom and study space access and assistance, answering questions about public computing and printing, and ensuring an environment that allows all patrons to enjoy the building safely and comfortably.

  • Other duties as assigned to assist in general library operations and fulfillment of AIUS mission, goals, and objectives.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Three years of post-secondary education–or–experience in higher education either as a student or employee and experience working in a high-volume customer service position–or–an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Experience working in a customer service position.

  • Previous experience with a variety of common computer and cloud-based software/apps.

  • Experience with computers, mobile devices, printers, scanners, copiers, flash drives, and common programs, and basic hardware troubleshooting.

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Previous experience working in a public or academic library, particularly in a public service role.

  • Desire to learn new things, live with constant change, and proactively contribute to the growth of AIUS departmental services.

  • Ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both in-person and in writing.

  • Adaptability for working in a fast-paced environment during normal semesters, as well as very quiet periods during intersessions.

  • Ability to adapt to organizational, procedural, policy, and technological changes.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and develop and maintain productive collaborative relations.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • During regular semesters, the working hours for this position are either:

  • Sunday – Thursday, 4:30 pm to 12:30 am

  • Meal break taken during regular working hours. OR

  • Sunday – Thursday, 3:30 pm to 12:30 am

  • Meal break will take place 7-8 pm

  • The AIUS Department has a weekly staff meeting from 1-2 pm most Thursdays.

  • The person in this role would be encouraged to attend this meeting, either in-person or remotely via Teams.

  • The schedule for classified staff in the AIUS department changes during all intersessions and the summer due to shortened library hours.

  • The person in this role can continue Sunday – Thursday, closing the library at 9 pm OR can switch to a regular weekday schedule.

  • All AIUS classified staff members may be required to flex their schedules to meet occasional vacation, sick leave, and other demands of the department.

Physical Demands

  • Duties will expose the employee to some dust and particulates as part of work related to library collections (books, etc.).

  • Duties will require the individual to leave the building after midnight. Campus escort can be arranged by contacting University Police.
