Brief Position Overview

MECHANIC I – primarily responsible for major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, large and small equipment, and tools.

MECHANIC II – In addition to Mechanic I duties and responsibilities, the Mechanic II is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, campus standby generators, large and small equipment and tools. Includes welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment. Participates in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessment.

MECHANIC III – In addition to Mechanic II duties and responsibilities, the Mechanic III is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on mid to heavy trucks, diesel engines, tractors hydraulics and other specialty vehicles, equipment, and implements.

Position Details

General Statement

The mechanic shop, as part of the Facilities Services department, services and maintains all heavy equipment, vehicles, equipment and implements used by Facilities Services and a variety of MSU departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

MECHANIC I –

  • Major mechanical work includes adjust, repair, and replace engines, motors, drivetrain, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, fuel systems, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, body controls systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

  • Minor maintenance duties and repairs such as adjust, lubricate, change fluids and filters, replace engine and body accessories, and repair and replace tires.

  • Requisition parts through Campus Stores and vendors.

  • Estimate time and cost of services.

  • Accurately completing service records.

  • Assist Service Technician(s) and Mechanic(s) as required.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

    MECHANIC II –

In addition to Mechanic I duties and responsibilities, Mechanic II is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, campus standby generators, large and small equipment and tools. Includes welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment. Participates in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessment

MECHANIC III –

In addition to Mechanic II duties and responsibilities, Mechanic III is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on mid to heavy trucks, diesel engines, tractors hydraulics and other specialty vehicles, equipment, and implements.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

MECHANIC I –

  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of mechanic/machinist trade.

  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, maintain, and repair a variety of automotive (gasoline and diesel), agricultural, and specialized equipment.

  • Estimate time and materials and maintain accurate records.

  • General computer use.

  • Organize and prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.

  • ASE certification Automobile/Light trucks for:

  • Engine repair

  • Suspension and Steering

  • Brakes

  • Electrical/Electronic systems.

  • Ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire ASE Certification Automobile/Light trucks for:

  • Automatic transmission/transaxle

  • Manual drive train and axles

  • Heating and Air conditioning

  • Light vehicle diesel engines

    MECHANIC II – Mechanic I qualifications PLUS

  • Valid Montana state Commercial Driver’s license, Class B, no air restrictions or, if licensed in a different state, the ability to obtain a Montana CDL within 60 days of starting in the position.

  • Must possess the following ASE Certifications

  • Automatic transmission/transaxle

  • Manual drive train and axles

  • Heating and Air conditioning

  • Light vehicle diesel engines

  • Demonstrated experience guiding and suggesting work methods, materials and practices to others in an effort to improve efficiency and maintenance of a fleet of vehicles.

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools and repair software systems.

  • Demonstrated general welding skills.

    MECHANIC III – Mechanic II qualifications PLUS

  • Must possess the following ASE Certifications:

  • ASE Master Automobile A1-A8,

  • Medium-Heavy Duty Truck H2, S2 or T2,

  • Medium-Heavy Duty Truck H4, S4 or T4,

  • Medium-Heavy Duty Truck H5, S5 or T5

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools and repair software systems.

  • Demonstrated ability in repairing heavy equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability in diagnosing and repairing Medium-Heavy truck and Tractor Hydraulics.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    MECHANIC I –

  • Weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts.

  • ASE Certification Automobile/Light trucks for:

  • Automatic transmission/transaxle

  • Manual drive train and axles

  • Heating and Air conditioning

  • Light vehicle diesel engine

  • Mobile Air Conditioning Certification

  • Other relevant certifications

    MECHANIC II –

  • Demonstrated experience managing and maintaining an auto parts inventory program.

  • Demonstrated experience repairing heavy equipment.

  • Other certifications relevant to the position, e.g. additional ASE or other certifications.

    MECHANIC III –

  • Other certifications relevant to the position, e.g. additional ASE certifications including Medium-Heavy Truck 3, 6 and 7.

    The Successful Candidate Will

The successful candidate will also have the following skills and abilities:

  • Skill/ability to: inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, adjust, maintain and repair a variety of automotive (gasoline and diesel), agricultural, and specialized equipment, including ability to fabricate parts for vehicles and equipment.

  • Perform precision welding on all types of materials.

  • Use modern testing and diagnostic equipment, such as electronic and computerized equipment.

  • Estimate time and materials and maintain accurate records.

  • Follow instructions, procedures, and regulations while meeting stated, preventative maintenance deadlines.

  • Effectively operate all work-related equipment in a safe manner.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Work well independently as well as part of a team.

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals, both internal and external to campus, while representing Facilities Services in a professional and courteous manner and represent Facilities Services and its programs to others in a professional and courteous manner.

Physical Demands

  • Predominant work is performed in the mechanic shop and the yard, however inclement weather often results in difficult working conditions.

  • The mechanic is subject to long periods of remaining in a stationary position and/or walking and exertion such as positioning self to bend, stretch, climb, reach and work under vehicles and equipment.

  • This position requires the ability to frequently transport and move large, cumbersome, heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

  • Work involves hazards associated with working around heavy vehicles and equipment such as power tools, welders, hydraulic lifts, and mowers, and working with oil, fuels, cleaning chemicals, etc.

  • Subject to continual loud noise from shop air compressor and machine shop tools and equipment.

  • This position must be able to safely and competently operate a variety of vehicles, large trucks, and small and large equipment.
