General Statement

MilTech is a Department of Defense ( DOD ) and Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) Partnership Intermediary with the mission to accelerate the transition of new technology to the U.S. Government. See http://www.montana.edu/miltech/ for further information.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Solutions Engineer I for the Development and Integration Group ( DIG ) will work directly with MilTech Solutions and Project Engineers, other MilTech staff, and industry partners to develop solutions that address DOD client technology gaps. Activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work directly with MilTech Solutions Engineers to help identify and develop the deliverables needed to address the technology gaps of clients.

  • Participate with project members to support the concept, planning, and execution of product development in support of innovative technology solutions.

  • Create and test samples of proposed technology solutions.

  • Support preliminary and critical design reviews with the DOD client and end users.

  • Assist in the development of Technical Data Packages. ( TDP )

  • Assist with development and execution of project timelines and following established budgets that meets customer expectations.

  • Identify and develop solutions that include technology and supplier scouting activities, technical research, vendor assessment, engineering costing analysis, and general manufacturing assistance to support identified technology gaps.

  • Follow State of Montana and Federal guidelines for the procurement of goods and services in support of project execution.

  • Travel to meet with DOD customers, and industry partners as required for the success of the project. This could be but is not limited to meeting with user groups to understand requirements, delivering final presentations, vetting industry capabilities, and to attend face to face meetings as needed.

  • Comply at all times with the MilTech Confidentiality Agreement governing non-disclosure of information encountered in the course of your duties, and the MilTech Technology Control Plan governing security and work controls. Both agreements will be signed by each employee and will remain in effect for the duration of MilTech employment.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated progressive experience in electrical design and product development in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with cross-function teams including mechanical, electrical, software, and project engineers throughout a project to integrate solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience with a wide variety of manufacturing and rapid prototype design and build for proof of concept.

  • Demonstrated significant and progressive experience with 3D CAD software, rapid prototyping platforms, electrical design CAD platforms, and/or similar.

  • Demonstrated experience developing technical data packages and operations manuals.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, prototyping, and manufacturing of ruggedized mechanical systems for military or other government programs.

  • Demonstrated experience in selecting materials, components, and hardware appropriate for ruggedized mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting design reviews and field evaluations.

  • Demonstrated experience with RF systems, C2 links, network data, and drone technology.

  • Experience working with deliverables subject to ITAR and other security-related restrictions.

  • Effectively collaborate with MilTech, MSU , DOD , government, civilian, internal and external personnel in order to accomplish multiple technology transition projects.

  • Possess the ability to design and develop innovative solutions that meet the customer’s requirements.

  • Possess excellent listening and communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Exhibit good judgement, flexibility, and innovation to respond to the needs of a wide variety of customers and coworkers.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

    This position is Bozeman-based and is contingent upon continued grant funding.

Successful candidate must be able to comply with the federally mandated requirements of U.S. export control laws, which may require proof that candidate is a U.S. person. Per 22 CFR §120.15, U.S. person means a person who is a lawful permanent resident as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20) or who is a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

This position requires the ability to meet government-defined restrictions appropriate for work level and access, including receiving favorable background checks by state and federal agencies pursuant to federal law and regulations.

This position requires ability to travel via all modes of transport when necessary to interact with DOD and/or DHS customers, including travel throughout the Continental United States as well as Alaska, Hawaii, U.S territories and possessions, and possibly other worldwide locations.
