General Statement

Instructors are needed to teach the following class, in the fall term, depending on need and available funding.

  • US101US First-Year Seminar

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

  • Teaching on-campus courses.

  • Advising, evaluating and assisting students.

  • Participating in pre-semester training and weekly faculty meetings.

  • Meeting regularly with, collaborating with, and evaluating peer leader, if one is assigned to your section.

  • Contributing as required to overall program assessment on an annual basis

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field or a related field

  • Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students, particularly freshmen, and colleagues within and outside the department

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Academic/professional experience, particularly in first-year courses.

  • Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses

  • Demonstrated knowledge of college student development

  • Promote the advancement of diversity.

  • Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment.   • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.

The Program

Courses with University Seminar (US) core designation are primarily intended for first-year students throughout all curricula to provide a platform for collegiate level discourse. Activities that hone written and oral communication skills are universally incorporated, but themes represented in individual US core courses vary considerably to reflect the department or program from which the course originates. All US core courses are small in size and rely heavily on seminar-style teaching where course content is delivered by discussion and interaction rather than by lecture. This learning environment promotes vibrant interactions between first-year students, a faculty member, and in many courses, a more experienced student fellow or peer mentor. US core courses provide a venue where students can enjoy rigorous academic discussions that promote critical thinking, learning, and understanding in a supportive and truly collegiate manner.

Through completion of the US core, students will: 1) demonstrate critical thinking abilities; 2) prepare and deliver an effective oral presentation; and 3) demonstrate analytical, critical, and creative thinking in written communication.

US101US First-Year Seminar is a multi-disciplinary course, presented in seminar format, drawing from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy, and encourages students to explore issues critical to their academic goals and objectives. The course emphasizes verbal communication, critical thinking, intellectual development, and academic choices. This course fulfills the University Seminar (US) requirement of the core curriculum, and is assessed annually to adhere to MSU’s University Seminar Core objectives.

The Department

University Studies is the academic program of choice for the 20% of first-year students who choose to explore the many degrees and majors offered at MSU prior to declaring. University Studies also works with continuing students who are transitioning between majors. At University Studies, we offer complete academic advising for our own majors as well as students in the Pre-Med option and students in transition. We also teach approximately 45 sections of US101US.

One of the objectives of University Studies is to contribute to a successful first year for MSU undergraduates. Through professional academic advising and high-quality seminar instruction, we help students understand the possibilities and responsibilities of the academic experience through an exploration of their interests and goals and the development of intellectual knowledge and skills.
