Brief Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Parking Enforcement Supervisor, Parking Enforcement Officers conduct foot and vehicle patrols of University parking lots in order to enforce campus parking regulations. Some of the duties will include: patrolling campus parking areas; issuing citations; training and instructing officers on the use of the T2 enforcement and parking management software; selling vehicle parking permits; providing information about the University to visitors; routinely work overtime assignments to assist with parking for special and athletic events; and assisting motorists in distress.

Position Details

General Statement

Under the supervision of the Parking Enforcement Supervisor, Parking Enforcement Officers conduct patrols of University parking lots to ensure a safe parking experience on campus, deter parking violations, and provide motorist assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Parking enforcement:

  • Officer will perform foot and vehicle patrols of campus parking areas; write parking citations; issue written and verbal warnings; identify vehicles to tow and initiate and assist in the towing/booting process; release vehicles and bicycles from impound; assist in parking and traffic control for special and athletic events; train and instruct officers on the use of ticket-writing equipment and parking management software; enforce bicycle regulations.

Equipment operation and maintenance:

  • Safely and legally operate departmental vehicles; maintain garage pay stations; garage cleaning; operate fixed and handheld devices to issue and print citations; operate computer hardware and Windows-based software; operate battery booster packs, jumper cables, tow straps, jacks, and lockout tools to provide motorist assistance.

Customer Service:

  • Officer will provide parking and general University information to students, staff and visitors in the field and at the front counter; handle complaints from customers; assist motorists in distress; assist other department requests as required.

Security and Safety:

  • Report damage or acts of vandalism, unruly behavior etc., to appropriate personnel; report hazardous situations in parking lots; work as a team member to provide essential support to other department personnel as required.

Clerical:

  • Provide front counter assistance to sell permits, receive citation payments, and maintain information in the parking database; prepare dockets for appeals committee review.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • High School Graduation or G.E.D. plus demonstrated customer service experience that includes knowledge of, and experience with, interpreting and explaining rules and regulations to the general public.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience working with and learning new computer and software systems.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining vehicles and other mechanical systems.

  • Familiarity with the MSU -Bozeman campus.

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public.

  • Work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, with minimal supervision.

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills.

  • Represent University Police and Parking Services to others in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Assist members of the university community with unlocks, jump-starts, directions, purchasing parking permits, etc.

  • Learn and then operate various parking vehicles and equipment.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Public Safety Policy (http://www.montana.edu/clery/) and Crime Statistics (http://www.montana.edu/police/crime-statistics.html) .

  • Requires mandatory overtime for Athletics and special events.

  • Must pass an in-depth background investigation prior to final employment offer.

  • Must possess and maintain the ability to give credible testimony in a court of law.
