General Statement
The Statistical Machine Learning Laboratory at Montana State University, led by Dr. Michael Wojnowicz (https://mikewojnowicz.github.io/), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
Our laboratory is publishing in top-tier venues such as The International Conference of Machine Learning ( ICML ), the Journal of Machine Learning Research ( JMLR ), Transactions in Machine Learning Research ( TMLR ), and IEEE Big Data.
Methodological areas of particular interest to our laboratory include (1) probabilistic modeling of spatiotemporal data and (2) the extension of classical statistical methods to large, complex modern datasets.
A primary application area of interest is the SMART FireS project at Montana State University ( MSU ), supported by a $20 million NSF EPSCoR grant, which aims to improve understanding and management of prescribed fires using cutting-edge machine learning technologies. Other application areas of interest include early cancer detection (with collaborators at Harvard University and The Dana Farber Cancer Institute), cybersecurity (with collaborators at Crowdstrike and Microsoft), and modern treatment of psychological disorders (with collaborators at McLean Hospital, Yale, and UCLA ).
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and conduct pioneering methodological research in the field of statistical machine learning, including research related to the NSF SMART FIRES grant.
Develop machine learning algorithms
Apply data science techniques
Actively contribute to an interdisciplinary research team.
Publish findings
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related field.
Strong background in statistics or mathematics.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
At least one previous publication in the field of mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related field.
Experience with spatial modeling, temporal modeling, Bayesian modeling, and/or statistical machine learning.

Continuation of employment is contingent upon the availability of funding.
