Brief Position Overview

Dr. Madison Myers, Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at Montana State University, in collaboration with Dr. Jamshid Moshrefzadeh at the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys ( DGGS ) in Fairbanks, is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate the timescales of volcanic unrest that lead to eruption at Okmok volcano, Alaska.

General Statement

The Department of Earth Sciences includes 13 full-time faculty, made up of geologists, and geographers and our student body includes about 50 graduate students and over 200 undergraduate majors, with a growing number of postdoctoral researchers (10). A complimentary staff of roughly 20 adjuncts, research professors, affiliates, and support personnel are an invaluable asset to our departmental community for learning, discovery, and engagement.

Our department takes the Montana State University tagline “Mountains and Minds” quite literally. Our faculty, staff, and students use their minds for learning and discovery in the scenic and rugged mountains of southwest Montana, as well as in mountainous areas and rural landscapes around the nation and worldwide. Earth Science students have many opportunities to participate in field trips that facilitate the study of earth processes, earth resources, earth history, and environments that people have modified.

Duties and Responsibilities

This project will use a combination of Fe–Mg diffusion in both olivine and pyroxene, as well as H diffusion in pyroxene, to determine the timescales of magma processes preceding four different Okmok eruptions. The successful candidate will work closely with Montana State, DGGS , and the Alaska Volcano Observatory to perform diffusion modeling on products from four eruptions of Okmok volcano and synthesize the resulting timescales with interdisciplinary monitoring data for the two most recent eruptions. The successful candidate will also collaborate with a new Master’s student at Montana State, who will be leading the H diffusion in pyroxene portion of the project.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Ph.D. in volcanology/geochemistry or a related field is required by the date of hire.

  • Familiarity with diffusion modeling, operating an electron microprobe and/or micro- FTIR system, and synthesizing interdisciplinary datasets to better understand volcanic systems.

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Independence in the lab, making high-quality measurements and processing these data.

  • Building and running numerical coding, with strong skills in figure making and writing.
