Brief Position Overview

The Director of RED Service Centers facilitates and supports activities associated with MSU RED Service Centers (also known as core facilities).

    Position Details

    General Statement

The Office of Research and Economic Development ( RED ) at MSU includes the Office of Research Development, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Compliance and the Office of Economic Development & Impact. This position will oversee RED Service Centers by providing centralized research services to both internal MSU users and external community partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with RED Service Center Directors and Staff.

  • Meets regularly with the cores and delegates action items to proper channels (HR items to BOM , financial items to RED finance staff, etc.).

  • Assist service centers in coordinating with RED Budget Director, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Compliance, Human Resources, Procurement, and other University departments to ensure compliance with MSU policies and federal regulations.

  • Coordinate with the Office of Economic Development & Impact to increase visibility of RED Service Centers and foster relationships with external companies.

  • Develop and implement short- and long-range goals for the standardization of common operations between service centers.

  • Develop and direct implementation of University Service Center policy.

  • Standup a Service Center Management Software that can maintain a research equipment database, reserving equipment, logging equipment hours used, etc.…

  • Governs process for MSU entities interested in becoming a RED Service Center and refer successful applicants to VPRED and Research Council for approval.

  • Manage RED Facility Improvement Grant and RED Service Center Grant programs identify and work with the Office of Research Development to identify external grant opportunities for Service Center Directors.

  • Coordinate monthly Service Center meetings and oversee the annual Service Center review process.

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of critical research equipment housed at MSU ; oversee service contracts, and prevent redundancy in equipment purchases.

  • Directs a loan program helping to fund strategic capital equipment replacement.

  • Direct the RED Sustainability Green Lab program to increase awareness and participation in lab sustainability efforts.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task within a compliance program comprehensively, working independently with a high degree of self-motivation, accuracy and efficiency, with little or no direct oversight of day-to-day operations by supervisor.

  • Expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as applicable, campus policy.

  • Advanced analytical skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage high-level and complex projects within time constraints.

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related science; supplemented with at least two (2) years of related experience.

  • Advanced degree in biological sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related science.

  • This position is supported by grants and contracts and while the need for this position is expected to be long-term, the nature of the position will evolve with the specific needs of externally funded projects.
