General Statement

The Bothner Lab is looking for a qualified individual to fulfill the duties of a Research. The individual filling this position will carry out biological and analytical chemistry research related to elucidating CO2 fixation by novel microbial enzymes, pathways for iron and sulfur acquisition in methanogens, and metabolic changes due to cellular and organismal stress. Experimental work includes cell culture, protein expression, purification, and characterization, activity assays, and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and proteomics.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing biochemical experimentation

  • Data analysis and interpretation

  • Ordering materials and supplies

  • Participating in the writing and preparation of manuscripts for publication and grant proposals

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • B.S. or M.S in chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology or related field plus a minimum of one year of research experience

  • Experience with one or more of the following: cell culture, protein expression, purification and characterization, bioinformatics.

  • Experience with and/or demonstrated ability to learn common word processing, reference management, and data processing software

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques including UV-vis, HPLC , FPLC , Mass Spectrometry including GCMS , LCMS , and MALDI - TOF

  • Experience using common bioinformatics tools

  • Experience with software tools for differential omics analyses such as Progenesis, SCMS , and/or Metaboanalyst

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Have good interpersonal, organizational, communication, and computer skills

  • Have the ability to work independently and with others as well as an aptitude for establishing and maintaining constructive working relationships with a wide spectrum of laboratory personnel in a collaborative environment, while representing MSU in a professional manner.

  • Have the ability to maintain excellent records, pay attention to detail, meet deadlines, prioritize multiple projects, present research results in front of colleagues.
