The Department of Native American Studies is seeking an Outreach Coordinator for the Office of American Indian/Alaska Native Student Success (AI/ ANSS ) who is an advocate and mentor, committed to providing excellent student and academic support to increase the recruitment, retention, and academic success of American Indian and Alaska Native students at Montana State University.

General Statement

The Office of American Indian/Alaska Native Student Success is dedicated to the enrollment, achievement, and success of American Indian and Alaska Native students at Montana State University. AI/ ANSS , through a collaborative and nurturing philosophy, supports Native students and their families navigate the transition to Montana State University and the Bozeman community. The AI/ ANSS provides advocacy on behalf of Native students with the MSU faculty, staff, and programs while supporting Native student academic, social, personal, and cultural growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit High School students on the seven Montana reservations, nearby communities, and adjacent state reservation communities.

  • Attend and participate in recruiting at the seven Montana Tribal Colleges during the Tribal College tour.

  • Serve all American Indian/Alaska Native students needing and seeking to become academically and personally successful at Montana State University.

  • Assist American Indian students in all majors pursuing academic success through coordinated recruitment and retention efforts.

  • Provide culturally sensitive career and personal counseling and academic advising.

  • Provide services in the student center, faxing, campus and community advocacy, coordinate small emergency loans and long-distance phone availability, snacks, coffee, and clean computers in the AIC room.

  • Attend and participate in all Native student-related groups on campus

  • Cultivate and build relationships with High School guidance counselors and Tribal College staff and faculty.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with college students or similar population as mentor/advisor in a professional environment.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications and learning new technologies.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s Degree in Adult and Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or related discipline.

  • Experience advising or teaching underserved students.

  • Experience giving oral presentations and speaking publicly to groups, especially college students.

  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • The person in this position will work a varying schedule that will include evenings and occasional weekends as assigned.

  • Routine recruitment traveling in addition travel to attendance at meetings, trainings, and conferences, etc.
