Bozeman Health System Director of Application Services in Bozeman, Montana
Position Summary:
The System Director of Application Services will provide overall leadership and direction to the Application Services staff within Bozeman Health and is responsible for strategizing, planning, coordinating, and supervising all activities related to the design, development, implementation, and ongoing support of the clinical and business organizational information systems and software applications. Scope of systems include the electronic health record, Epic, and all third-party clinical and business applications. This role also oversees the IT Project Management Office (PMO), ensuring appropriate prioritization, support, and success of application technology projects in support of strategic and operational initiatives of the Bozeman Health system.The System Director of Application Services serves as a member of the System Leadership team and reports to the Chief Information Officer.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required
Master’s Degree in Information Technology, Healthcare, OR recognized related certification through a recognized appointing entity
Commitment to obtain Graduate degree within 2 years of accepting the position
Five (5) to eight (8) years’ experience in healthcare applications including EHR, preferably Epic, and ERP
Strong working knowledge of Information Technology and Information Systems
Preferred
Certification in recognized process improvement methodology (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean, etc.)
Project management experience
Experience with Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
Experience supporting healthcare applications such as those commonly found in hospitals or healthcare systems, e.g., hospital information system, lab information system, pharmacy information system, radiology information system, etc.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and strategic thinking skills to understand and anticipate the impact and opportunities across multiple critical projects
Demonstrated ability to build and establish positive relationships with stakeholders and staff at all levels
Experience managing multiple operational and strategic initiatives while maintaining exceptional customer service standards
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively lead change

Responsible for managing Application Services resources and developing the overall strategies to support short and long term application management
Mentors and supports professional growth and advancement for direct reports and their teams
Maintains a highly competent staff to meet the objectives and strategies of Bozeman Health
Develops staff to be agile and able to meet the changing needs of users, groups, and offices; new projects and technologies; and varying staff strengths
Maintains financial responsibility for application services operations and budget, as well as outlining the cost and ROI for the application strategy, working closely with the business units and leadership
Identifies capital needs during each budgeting cycle in support of the organization’s strategic goals and applicable application rationalization initiatives
Develops and maintains application rationalization for the organization to recognize savings and consolidation among applications for improved maintenance and support of applications
Participates in departmental & organizational budget / forecast meetings and execution
Supervises completion of departmental or system-wide projects according to time schedules and budgets developed in conjunction with the organization
Responsible for business strategy and planning to ensure appropriate resources, budget, and tools to provide the highest level of customer service
Works with System Director Infrastructure & Technology to maintain an optimal applications operating environment
Oversees the adoption and growth of Bozeman’s clinical and business systems, including the Electronic Health Record (EHR), Electronic Resource Planning (ERP), and Human Capital Management (HCM) systems, which serve as foundational technology across our system
In conjunction with the System Director Infrastructure & Technology, oversees the Change Advisory Board, upgrades, and special updates to all systems
Ensures consistent and effective change management strategies are in place to communicate system changes
Develops, supports, and maintains the IT EHR Governance structure, which is inclusive of EHR Advisory Councils and Super User Workgroups
Develops, supports, and maintains the project submission process for projects requiring Information Technology teams
Develops, supports, and maintains a resource management tool and project Gantt chart to provide transparency and visibility to the organization in regards to current priorities
Develops, supports, and maintains the Community Connect program and active partnership(s)
Interfaces and serves as main point of contact and point of escalation for vendor relationships
Reviews and negotiates contract terms with vendors
Works closely with the application teams, business and clinical units, and leadership to execute the application roadmap programs and plans within the defined budget and timeline
Research and keep current with the latest applications, software, and technologies to identify new solutions to meet clinical, business, and technical needs
Recommends and implements process improvement opportunities, including Clinical & Quality improvements and Revenue Cycle Optimizations
Provides expert counsel and guidance across Bozeman on business, education, and clinical issues as seen through an IT lens, across the full range of strategic, programmatic, and operational issues
Helps develop the long-term vision and strategic plans in alignment with, and support for, Bozeman’s strategies and goals
Directs the definition, architecture, development, implementation, maintenance, and support of applications systems which drive and enable the organization’s objectives
Supports and provide direction on all integration activities across Bozeman Health and related affiliates
Develops and manages an Application Portfolio and roadmaps for Bozeman Health, including appropriate maintenance and sunset strategies, with a focus on driving integration and optimal software & application use
Partners effectively with outside entities who are responsible for managing environments in which our staff operates to audit and ensure their compliance to acceptable security standards, including collaborative planning for areas of risk or non-compliance
