Position Summary

The Water Conservation Technician performs administrative support functions associated with educational outreach initiatives and other program development efforts to help promote and grow the City’s water conservation program. This includes assisting in the preparation and presentation of educational programs, performing water use assessments, researching and administering rebate and incentive programs, assisting in the evaluation of program data, and other related efforts to promote water conservation and the importance of Bozeman’s water resources to the community. This position requires the ability to create and maintain effective relationships with City officials and employees, and the general public. Demonstrated effective communication and customer service skills are required.

Work Week: Typically, Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Some regular evening and weekend work required for events and meetings.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Assists in researching best practices and ideas for community education programming and delivery;

  • Assists in gathering and analyzing data as it pertains to water conservation;

  • Assist in the preparation, delivery, and presentation of educational programs, printed brochures, displays used at events, and demonstration sites;

  • Assist water conservation division staff in the maintenance and installation of educational displays;

  • Assist water conservation division staff with project implementation and program development

  • Assist division staff by providing support for educational presentations for all age groups to inform public of water conservation program;

  • Assist with the administration of a variety of water conservation rebate and incentive programs;

  • Perform indoor and outdoor water use assessments, irrigation audits;

  • Perform general office duties including: filing, answering telephone calls, retrieving information from the phone system, typing, copying, faxing and entering data, researching information and supporting the water conservation division specialist/manager in their duties;

  • Receive and respond to written or telephone inquiries from the public about various elements of the water conservation program;

  • Advocates and promotes water conservation efforts and programs through the use of written materials, social media, presentations, and customer contact;

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural or environmental science, natural resource management, sustainability, environmental studies, public communication, environmental engineering, or related field; and

  • One to three years of experience in water conservation, natural resources, or sustainability experience; or

  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of water resource issues and conservation concepts and practices;

  • Knowledge of the methods, processes, and procedures to conduct research utilizing a variety of methods including the Internet;

  • Knowledge of administrative support concepts and practices;

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;

  • Ability to apply proper and effective written and verbal communication in the dissemination of information and response to inquiries and complaints;

  • Some knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals for graphics and text preparation;

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team;

  • Ability to track concurrent projects and tasks independently;

  • Ability to employ good problems solving skills;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

  • Communicate professionally, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to speak on a variety of subjects and engage in discussions with groups or individuals to present information explaining and promoting programs, and to prepare business letters, and other written communications as directed;

  • Ability to retrieve, organize, track and analyze data as it pertains to the water conservation program;

  • Ability to maintain records using prescribed format and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, customers, agency representatives and the public, which includes listening empathetically to customers, and tactfully enforcing and promoting elements of the water conservation program;

  • Ability to safely operate and care for motor vehicles and/or assigned City owned equipment;

  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the function of services within the public sector, preferably within a municipal government;

  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn current practices and procedures involved in City service delivery;

  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the overall functions, duties and responsibilities of assigned Departments/divisions;

  • Some knowledge of modern office procedures, practices and equipment;

  • Good phone etiquette and practices;

  • Ability and willingness to perform indoor and outdoor water use assessments, irrigation audits;

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Ingenuity and inventiveness and the use of the appropriate levels of discretion in the performance of assigned tasks;

Required Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and obtain a Montana Driver's License within 60 days of employment;

  • Must have or successfully complete the Irrigation Association's Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) program within one year of employment and maintain certification through employment;
